Anyone remember her?? I just rewatched part of the last set against her match vs. Arantxa at the 96 French Open and she was GOOD. THe next time I saw her was at the 2000 Wimbledon 1st round vs. Monica Seles where she took her to 3 sets. So what happened to her? Her last result so far was a 3 set loss against Elena Dementieva at this years U.S. Open. I hiope she can find her form from 96 because so far she has remained in the vault of the "could have been kind of players". Here's an extensive review of her career so far:

Reached the 4th Round of 1991 Australian Open which was only her 2nd tournament as a pro! Also reached the 4th round of 95 Australian Open, 96 U.S. Open, 97 Australin Open, and 97 U.S. Open. And of course you can't forget her controversial loss to my Arantxa at the 96 French Open in the QF. <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

As for singles titles, she's won only 1 in 1999, but was also a finalist at 96 German Open (beating Schett, Hingis, Pierce, Huber, and Likhovtseva before falling to Steffi Graf 7-5 in the 3rd), as well as a finalist in 2 other tourneys.

As for SF, she reached the SF in very high quality tourneys such as 94 Italian (beating Pierce along the way), 94 Fliderstadt (beating Martinez), 94 Essen (beating Hingis), and of course 1996 Key Biscayne (winning 5 matches including wins over ASV, Testud, Halard-Decugis, and Spirlea before losing to Rubin in 3 sets.

Her wins over top players are: Kimiko Date, Dominique van roost, Silvia Farina, Jennifer Capriati, Mary Joe Fernandez, Kim Clijsters, Arantxa Sanchez, Nathalie Tauziat, Ai Sugiyama, Maggie Maleeva, Anke Huber, Mary Pierce, Martina Hingis, Barbara Schett(includes a double bagel), Elena Likhovtseva, Conchita Martinez, Julie Halard-Decugis, and Irina Spirlea.

Karina's still around, but unfortunately has slipped out of the top 100 at the moment. She had somewhat of a disappointing year, failing to really string together a lot of matches, or get any upsets (last year she beat Tauziat at Indian Wells, Martinez at the Olympics, and a few tournaments where she reached the latter stages at least). I'm hoping she can pick up her game, she's still got a very beautiful game to watch when she's on. More comfortable from the baseline, but capable of making net plays aswell. Mainly she is lacking confidence more than anything, and I think that she needs to work on improving her serve because that's something that does tend to let her down on occasion, especially since it doesn't have a whole lot of power.

After making the finals of 1997 Linz, she did crack into #10 in the world, but unfortunately after that was unable to defend the points from her terrific 1996 season, and hasn't duplicated the consistent results. She has the talent to be ranked much higher, so I sincerely hope that she is back up there competing against the top players so that everyone can see how good a player she is when at her best (If anyone saw her push Seles at Wimbledon last year I think they'd have still been impressed with her game).

Good to see many people who remember these great achievements in Karina's past. She still has some good years to come. She won't give up. She still had the capacity to climb into the top 30.

Go Karina!!

Julian:

Since the US Open, Habsudova played the $75K Challenger at Bordeaux, and qualifying at Leipzig, Moscow, Filderstadt, Zurich, and Linz. She didn't make the main draw at any of the last four events, however.

I saw Karina in Leipzig, but I don't see her play cos she lost in 1st round quali. so its 5 not her last 4 tournys she lost in the quali.

btw, I met some big Karina fans, who saw her match, they said she played great even she lost.
