Bulgarian tennis player appeals doping ban to CASFebruary 2, 2006

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Bulgarian tennis player Sesil Karatantcheva appealed her two-year doping ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The International Tennis Federation suspended the 16-year-old Karatantcheva on Jan. 11 after she twice tested positive for the steroid nandrolone.

"The player requests the annulment of the decision challenged," CAS said in a statement Thursday.

Karatantcheva contends she tested positive because she was pregnant at the time and had been taking food supplements, CAS said.

Karatantcheva reached the quarterfinals at last year's French Open after beating Venus Williams in the third round. She tested positive after losing to Russia's Elena Likhovtseva on May 31 in the quarterfinals. She also failed an out-of-competition test on July 5 in Tokyo.

CAS normally delivers its decisions within four months of an appeal.

I thought Sesil claimed she wasn't pregnant and didn't appear before the ITF?
