Nastja :worship: She was way off to start the match and looked visibly nervous and that always affects her quite badly. She managed to just string some points together and the quality rose from there. She played really good stuff in the final set and that part provided some amazing tennis. :D

Kasia  She really grew on me over the last two weeks! Was really impressed with her in the final two sets of this final. She was nervous at the start as well, but was helped by Nastja then. Once Nastja managed to pick up her level she still matched her and never backed down. While I am very happy for the tournament to have a home winner she hopefully leaves with her head held high and takes all the positives from an outstanding week. Today clearly showed that Top100 would be a realistic possibility and I hope she can do it on the back of this run. :)

I'm gonna say Kawa will never beat that performance ever again. 6-4 in the final set of a WTA final. That's borderline fantasy

Liepajan Queen! :worship: 3rd clay title and how nice to do it at home.

That was not her best tennis by any stretch (combo of nerves, home crowd pressure, and fatigue), but still a thoroughly entertaining encounter with a lot of ups and downs, and brilliant points here and there by both. :) The crowd wasn’t always fair to her opponent, but it’s great to see such a huge turnout to this new event, which can hopefully launch it to become a successful and long-standing event. I think she deserves some credit for that too.

Congrats to Kawa on such an amazing week. She got too nervy at the end of the 2nd set when she was close to closing it out, but to be fair she was really peaking in the first set. Amazing ROS today, and she took Nastija’s biggest weapon away from her (the drop shot) by being so quick up to the early ones… she barely used it today compared to the SF because Kawa did her homework on it.

Top 10 still a looming possibility for the Latvian over the next few weeks before her USO and Beijing points drop. Seva defends QF points in Cinci but Sabalenka is defending SF points in Montreal. Bencic right behind them too.

Such a close final. Not the highest quality, but some entertaining high-quality points.

Congrats on winning the title, Sevastova ! :worship:

Impressive how she came back from 3-6 0-2 down. Mentally strong like a champion.
Nastja was so nervous and quite bad today, but somehow won set 2 because of her experience.
A shocking weak performance. Too passive. Her backhand was poor, Kawa smartly attacked it.
Sevastova never gave up and won the important points. A Latvian winner in Latvia :)

Katarzyna had her chances to win

Kawa is a good consistent smart player and could have won this final.
Her backhand down the line is impressive. She hit many beautiful strong winners with it.
A successful tournament for her. I wonder if she will continue this high level or if this was a fluke ...

Sevastova
21 Winners 38 UEs
Kawa
26 Winners 38 UEs

Total points won
92 Sevastova
91 Kawa

Great match, considering that both players were playing with a high level of emotions.
Sevastova playing in front of her home crowd and ITF player Kawa playing in a WTA final.
Big congratulations to both players.
Kawa almost lost in the first round of qualifying, winning 7-6 in the 3rd set against Danilina.

TF commentators should not be too critical of the Latvian fans. This is probably the 1st tennis event they have attended. Many are probably football fans and they are acting like football fans.

Match was over when Kawa netted smash down BP after blowing 40-0 lead at 5-5 in 2nd set. Sevastova was pushing for her life on that point, like she always does. Kasia quit right after that, back to ITFs where she belongs obviously. Her game looks decent but not as impressive as her choking abilities. And serve looks very suspect, easy pickings for big hitters. She must be glad she has never faced top player, would struggle with that mentality and weak serve.

Crowds as disgusting like in that fed cup match in Israel.
Some moron yelling when Kawa was trying to save herself in 2nd set and was about to hit a smash.

What a disgusting luck for Sevastova.

Gutted. Kawa should have won, but lack of experience on that stage prevailed.

That was a very gritty performance by Nastja. Nastja really did struggle throughout the match. In contrast to yesterday when she was able to hit dropshot winners at will practically whenever she wanted today that shot just wasn't there for her. The dropshot really is the most ephemeral shot in the game. Even for the best drop shot hitters in the game it is a shot that the feel for comes and goes and one day it can be a decisive shot and the very next day it is practically useless. There is no other shot in the game that is so elusive. In fact Nastja's entire finesse game was missing today and that immediately meant Nastja was in for a very tough battle. It is not easy to win when one leaves one's best weapon in the locker room. On top of that Nastja was missing a lot early on whenever she attempted to be aggressive on her groundshots. When every part of one's game is working winning is easy. Today, nothing looked easy for Nastja and she only pulled through this match due to her resilience and heart.

As the match wore on it was clear somewhere in the middle of the second set that Nastja was just going to have to accept she wasn't in control of shots she usually is and she was going to have to simply reduce her error count, be disciplined and fight hard. She did that and gradually as the points got longer she she was slowly able to play more aggressively with her groundies without leaking so many errors. And she was able to pick up more errors from Katarzyna as well. But this match was never easy and it always seemed as if she was fighting against not just Kawa who was playing very solid smart tennis for most of the match, but also against herself. This wasn't Nastja best tennis today at all, but it was a very admirable performance nevertheless. Winning at home clearly meant a lot to her and despite being the leading home player this title wasn't handed to her and she had to work very hard all week to win this tournament. In the end it was a very deserved win.

Kawa is only 9W and 7L on hard courts this past year in ITF events.
So, it doesn't look good if she gets some WCs into WTA hard court events.
Kawa is basically a clay court specialist.
Sevastova is only 9 points from a top ten ranking. 3365 to 3356.

Why do you watch matches between two players you clearly have nothing but contempt for? Indeed based on your posts this week it seems you had nothing but contempt for the entire tournament and everyone who played in it. Yet you apparently kept watching. So why do you watch these matches that you so clearly feel are beneath you? Is it because it give you a false sense of superiority? I can think of no other reason. But I have to break the news to you. Looking down on others doesn't make your a better or even a smarter person. Shame that.
