Well, I guess she deserves a thread for the grass season now that she surprisingly won her first match today! :p

Premier Birmingham

1st round: Görges (8) def. Yastremska 36 64 63

was down 36 24* already but found a way back into the match, Yastremska started very good but made more UEs then later while Julia was able to improve, start was quite bad, got broken 3 times in a row there and struggled a bit with serve as usual this year but the end was pretty good, hopefully the start of a good grass court season this year as well.

Rodina next, not a bad draw for sure but can´t be too optimistic when it comes to Julia these days and Rodina obviously can play some decent tennis on grass as well but still should be able to take that chance and reach the QF....hopefully

That was a heck of comeback against the very talented Yastremska. A much needed win for her confidence, it looked like she was going down in straight sets. Yastremska is a player of the future for sure, huge game.

Julia does not seem to be at peak fitness from what I can see, but on grass that might not matter that much if she serves and hits well enough. Still, I'm not expecting too much from her until she gets herself back into peak condition.

I only see the second set; but it was a very good performance. Rodina wasn't playing bad at all but Julia serve pretty well. Her first serve was good... but the key today was the incredible quality of her second serve which never allow Rodina to put her under pressure. The footwork of Julia looks better too. Hope she can wins tomorrow and put her definitely on the rights tracks :smile2:

solid win today, no break for Rodina, two wins in a row for the first time since February!

Putintseva next, obviously not a bad draw, h2h is 3-0 for Julia, hopefully she can win the match tomorrow as well!

Julia reached Birmingham SF, beat Yulia Putintseva 6-3 6-2 ! :hearts:

70% 1st serve. 9 Aces, 3 DFs
Such a difference when Julia's big serve is on fire.
Julia dominated the match with her strong serve and forehand.
She overpowered little Yulia - who had no chance.

Good play from Julia but Putintseva is also someone who really suits her in general, serve is getting better again on grass and that helps her game a lot.
In 2nd set she had 90% 1st serves IN and won 15/18 of the pts over it and hit 6 Aces, that´s really actually really impressive to be that effective with 90% 1st serves IN.

Martic next, interesting match, they haven't played each other since 2008, I hope that Julia will play a good match again as Martic will be really tricky, we'll see how it goes, good luck!

Julia played great, Martic wasn't even bad at all and Julia won 4 and 3, hitting and serving great.

Into the final against the form player of the moment, French Open champ Ash Barty, who is also playing for the no. 1 spot. Will be very tough for sure, but if anyone in this tournament can beat Ash it's Julia.

65% 1st serves IN with 83% won over 1st serve, those are the stats which she missed so far in 2019 but it´s working again this week, great and aggressive tennis today as well, on a different level again now on grass.
Barty now in the final, tough to beat for sure, just won RG and now on grass she is normally even stronger with her good serve and good slice but pressure will be on Barty's side with the chance for her to becoming the new no1, Julia herself will have to serve great again and keep the numbers of UEs low and she will have to take her chances, if she gets some.

Anyway, much better start into the grass season than expected, gives some hope again for the rest of the season in general!

Well done, Julia ! :bounce:

Her strong serve and forehand :worship:
That was easy. Julia was the much better player.

34 Winners, 23 UEs
Martic
7 Winners, 16 UEs

Grass is her best surface now.

She lost 6-3 7-5. Julia was good but Barty was very solid and manage to return a lot of serves of Julia. Julia got her chances, specially in the second set. The Australian play a bit differently than last year when Julia beat her. She mixed up with her backhand, alternating shots with slice or spin (last year she was using practically only her slice) making life very difficult for Julia.

The key moment was at 5-4 0-30 when Julia makes a good return and Barty hit miss her backhand which still land in the court...Julia plays it the best she can and she was passed by a backhand on the line.

Now, Julia will probably pull out of Eastbourne. On another side, all the week Julia seems outside the court on a better mood since she splits with Geserer. It's clear that the last months have been very hard for her but now if she stays healthy we really can be confident again for the future.

shame but obviously not a surprise that she lost here, she had her chances in 2nd set but Barty played better at the big points, Julia herself struggled a bit with her serve towards the end as well.
Anyway, good tournament for her, good for her confidence, we´ll see if she plays in Eastbourne now, 1st round opponent is Tsurenko there, Peterson would wait in 2nd round, so surely not a bad draw there as well but her matches against Tsurenko are usually a mess, so we´ll see! :p

WIMBLEDON

(11)S.Williams v (Q)Gatto-Monticone
(Q)Juvan v Kr.Pliskova
(Q)Badosa v (Q)Flink
(Q)Ruse v (18)Goerges

Good chances to reach 3rd round at least, Ruse and Badosa/Flink surely should be winnable for Julia if she plays on a similar level as in Birmingham.
3rd round would be against Serena probably and Julia always looks bad against her, even if Serena is not in best shape, so I guess 3rd round is the maximum here unless Serena loses against Pliskova before but even Kr. Plis wouldnt be a good match up or Julia (h2h 0-2)...well better than Serena at least :p

Anyway, goal has to be to get two wins here and then we´ll see....

Julia win :smile2: 7-5 6-1. She was clearly nervous against an opponent with a very agressive game (not what Julia prefers). Julia was broken at 2-2, she doesn't serve enough first serve and Ruse make some great returns. The turning point was the next game which was a gift by the Rumanian (probably the lack of experience).
After a tight first set Julia plays better, more free and the quality of the serve of Ruse decrease. Good start in my opinion. Please, Can some one open a thread in the GM . Julia doesn't win enough match this year to allow that :wink2:

Julia into Wimbledon R3 ! :)

She beat Flink 6-1 6-4. Julia was simply too powerful. Easy win.

Serena next :hehehe:
