Preview before the tournament

1# Jelena Dokic, who seems to in a slump has a first round bye and will either play young French girl Tatiana Golovin or Anastasia Myskina, who tries everything at the moment to win matches.

6# Mervana Jugic-Salkic will play injured Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova or Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi - if she and Jelena can win their first matches, both will set up a meeting in the Quaterfinals.

4# Martina "Bitch" Hingis, who reached the final in Stanford last week, will play against Rossana Neffa-de los Rios or Eleni Daniilidou.

5# Ai Sugiyama, who lost surprisingly early last week will play either the hot Maria Kirilenko or Serena Williams, who was seeded last week.

8# Jennifer Capriati is the only seed who has to play its first round match - and she got a difficult one. Maria Sharapova, fresh from her semifinal finish in Stanford, beating 1# Dokic there, is a tough oponment. Her second round opponment would be more difficult with the back-to-back winner Amelie Mauresmo or her former doubles partner Monica Seles.

3# Jie Zheng, who also lost early last week will play last weeks semifinalist Vera Zvonareva or Iveta Benesova.

7# Paola Suarez, who is going to be tournament director for three weeks, will open against either Lubomira Kurhajcova or Petra Mandula.

2# Venus Williams, who won the title from Forest Hills last week will play Chanda Rubin or Nathalie Dechy in her second round.

Russian first round battles!
Miss Myskina

The lowest ranked of the Russian team Myskina has something to prove during her match. Not only for her team and country, but for herself. She has had succes in doubles where she is ranked 2nd. The Muscovite has to face 16 year old Tatiana Golovin, born in Russia but plays for France. Myskina has the talent to beat Golovin but does she have the drive?
Miss Kuznetsova
One of the up and coming Russians. Svetlana has proved herself on the singles and doubles court. She starts her tournament off with a match up with the lone Israeli Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi. Anna, a former USSR #1, has started stong with a Olympics run. Svetlana can win this if her mind is in the spot.
Miss Kirilenko
Now the #1 Russian(by one spot) Maria Kirilenko is the most talented. From nothing to top 15 in a short time is something only 1 other Russian has done,Zvonareva. Kirilenko has had strong showings at Wimbledon and the Olympics. Expect a Semi-Final finish. She starts her tournament off against strong serving Williams of the US.
Miss Sharpova
Straight from Siberia one of Russias most famous stars. Maria has retired before but came back under a new coach. Maria will face 8th seeded Capriati in the first round. She is the only Russian to face a seed in the first round. Capriati is a tough player but Maria has her abilities. Capriati is the heavy favorite but expect Maria to fight for every point.
Miss Zvonareva
The #2 ranked Russian,#13, is enjoying her favorite part of the season. She is the only Russian,so far,in the race for the YEC at #7 with American Capriati. The Russian who slumped from 2 weeks before Wimbledon, the 2 weeks before she reached 2 SF, and just ended last week with another semi-final performance. She starts against Czech Iveta Benesova, ranked 3 behing Zvonareva. It will be a tough match. Could go either way.
