"She Got Game" Documentary to Premier during Rogers AT&T Cup

The highly acclaimed tennis documentary, "She Got Game: Behind the Scenes of the Women's Tennis Tour," will be making its Canadian theatrical debut during the 2003 Rogers AT&T Cup on August 9th at 9:15 p.m. at the Bloor Cinema. The documentary has been viewed at several film festivals around North America, receiving positive reviews. The Toronto screening is sponsored by PharmAssist?-Katz Group Canada Ltd.'s professional pharmacy brand-the official drugstore retailer of Rogers AT & T Cup. Tennis fans normally see their favourite players perform on the court. They are accustomed to seeing these world-class athletes hit the powerful forehands and the graceful backhands. What fans don't get to see are the demands of being a professional player, ranging from trying to get a little bit of privacy to the hectic travel schedule. Thanks to "She Got Game," filmed by Abbey Neidik and Bobbi Jo Krals, the average tennis fan now has the chance to take a look behind the scenes of the WTA Tour.

The documentary follows the path of several players as they go through the routine of being a professional tennis player. The filmmakers were given all access to several WTA Tour events, including the Rogers AT&T Cup, in both Montreal and Toronto, and the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Russia, over a year. The film documents the struggles of being successful on Tour through the eyes of Torontonian Sonya Jeyaseelan and the pressure of being a top ranked player, through the eyes of American Jennifer Capriati. For more information, contact Bobbi Jo Krals (Co-Director/Co-Producer) at [email protected] or Carm at the Bloor Cinema at (416) 516-2331 or [email protected]. Tickets will be available at the door for $10, first come, first serve. The Bloor Cinema is located at 506 Bloor St. W., just east of Bathurst St. Several other current and former WTA Tour stars are showcased in the film, including Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Serena Williams, Barbara Schett, Chanda Rubin and Martina Hingis.

This year, it's all on the line at the 2003 Rogers AT&T Cup. Catch many stars of the WTA Tour from August 9th to the 17th at the National Tennis Centre in Toronto. For tickets and updated tournament information, visit www.tenniscanada.com or call 1-800-398-8761.

Tickets to the Movie Theatre.
Above title is Documentary (Featured Film), which will be premiered/played in Canadian Theatre during Rogers AT&T Cup.
It is not clear if it is playing anywhere in US, or abroad.
Sorry, I am a bit confused myself :)

I think channel 4 might show it - they showed a documentary last year about the tour, following maggie Maleeva on the indoor circuit in autumn 2001 - she was crying after she lost to Jen at the year end champs.

Hollywood Premiere of SHE GOT GAME on November 8th

November 06, 2003

Finalist in Competition at prestigious AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival

?A MUST SEE? ? Jon Wertheim, Sports Illustrated

HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - What is the price of a dream? Award-winning documentary filmmakers Abbey Jack Neidik & Bobbi Jo Krals spent three years looking for an answer while making the feature-length documentary SHE GOT GAME: Behind-the-Scenes of the Women?s Tennis Tour. The award-winning film makes its HOLLYWOOD PREMIERE on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8 at 8:30pm as a finalist in competition at the prestigious AFI LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL -- ?Touching and revealing, SHE GOT GAME brilliantly captures the perils and joys of women's tennis and of pursuing a dream.? ? AFI FEST 2003.

SHE GOT GAME`s Hollywood premiere coincides with the Bank of America WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche at Staples Center in Los Angeles, and several pro tennis players are expected to attend the screening and participate in a Q&A session with the filmmakers after the film. The screening is open to the public (first come, first serve) and will take place at the renowned ArcLight Hollywood Cinemas, located at 6360 W. Sunset Blvd. (www.arclightcinemas.com).

Filmed in the United States, Canada, England, Germany, Russia, and Australia, SHE GOT GAME contrasts the intriguing personal stories of tennis superstars like Americans Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati & Chanda Rubin, Switzerland?s Martina Hingis, and Russian Anna Kournikova with the struggles of journeyman players like Canada?s Sonya Jeyaseelan, whose strict Indian father quit his job when she was six years-old to mold her into a tennis star.

With over $50 million in annual prize money, tennis is the highest paid women?s sport in the world. But with over 1,000 young women competing on the WTA Tour, only a gifted few attain fame and fortune. Superstar tennis moms Oracene Williams and Denise Capriati share the joys and challenges their families faced raising champions in the spotlight, and we meet up with tennis legends Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, and television sports commentators Bud Collins and Mary Carillo, whose wisdom and ironic humor help us understand what the insular world of women?s pro tennis is really like.

Part road trip, part human drama, SHE GOT GAME weaves these personal stories together to reveal a universal human portrait of sacrifice and perseverance in a cat-eat-cat world where winning is everything. Directed by Bobbi Jo Krals & Abbey Jack Neidik. Produced by Abbey Jack Neidik, Bobbi Jo Krals, Irene Angelico. Editor: Howard Goldberg. Writers: Howard Goldberg, Bobbi Jo Krals, Abbey Neidik. Camera: Abbey Jack Neidik & Bobbi Jo Krals. Sound: Edward Krupa. Narrator: Catherine Kidd. Music: Daniel A. Vermette and Corey Hart.

SHE GOT GAME was produced by DLI Productions & Esperanto Productions, in association with LIFE NETWORK; with the collaboration of Radio-Canada Sports and TFO; with the participation of the: Canadian Television Fund ? License Fee Program, Telefilm Canada: Equity Investment Program (EIP), Québec & Canada Film and TV Tax Credits.

Tennis might be the most glamorous and lucrative of all women's sports. But as SHE GOT GAME shows, it also might be the most lonely and heartbreaking. Bobbi Jo Krals and Abbey Jack Neidik's absorbing documentary follows the journey of Sonya Jeyaseelan, ranked #47 in the world. She struggles daily to to overcome injuries, end an interminable losing streak and confront a past that has robbed her of a normal childhood, a decent education and a nurturing family life. As many of her fellow players and old tennis academy friends including Anna Kournikova, Jennifer Capriati and Amelie Mauresmomove up the rankings, Jeyaseelan must wage a battle with herself that might be more formidable than any opponent she's ever faced. Touching and revealing, SHE GOT GAME brilliantly captures the perils and joys of women's tennisand of pursuing a dream.
