I find this choice of events interesting. She is not officially in the tournament, since she missed the deadline, but can accept a wildcard if she is offered one.
I am a bit suprised that Jen chose the event. Although the lineup is not very deep, the second round (when Jen would start) is only about a week and a half after the US Open. Then again, Serena was originally going to play and played Tokyo in the same week last year.
