The TC and ESPN marketing departments used Serena for many years to sell tennis by creating a ‘story’ -- why an average American sport fan should care about tennis.

Facing an obvious void, Coco was identified as a best potential substitute, the one that could be the most appealing to a broad tennis fan base, young audience, and an average person who causally watches sport on TV.

They created “the narrative,” and gave the talking points to all those Davenports, Shrivers and others, who have simply repeated “the message” for the last four years, trying to get the American audience somewhat excited about tennis – this is how a marketing “alternative reality” is being created.

Coco is an obvious victim here. What 15 yo would say they don’t want to become the best player in the world when everybody around them claims they are that wonderful?

We know there are serious limitations in her game. I personally, after her four seasons on tour, doubt she will be able to overcome these shortcomings. Nonetheless she should have a fulfilling career being a Top 15 player with occasional titles when her draw collapses. I really think we should appreciate that she is a professional and very hardworking teenager, how many of those do you see around?

You joined one hour ago to post this? The real question is how long until @goldenlox the Gauff obsessed hater chimes in.
Ha Ha so true, he posts about conspiracy theories and how Americans are sheep following every move the media throws at them about Gauff. It's like a talking point technique the Kremlin uses and he's from Russia and use to sport the Russian flag many years ago.

I hate the hype. I dont hate any player. Dont throw your projections on to me.
I just saw the hype early because Oudin played Dementieva, Petrova, Wozniacki, Pavs, Sharapova in that 2009 US Open and this nonsense hit the same way
Let her win something before you claim anyone is the next Serena
But its not Gauff's fault at all

The hate she gets is a bit weird as she seems nice enough, and doesn’t exhibit “bad behavior” on the court. But everyone has “haters” here, and people especially enjoy the schadenfreude of seeing someone lose when they view them as overhyped. The fact that she’s American and was seemingly “anointed” as the next big thing probably rubbed people the wrong way. If she were some Czech waif and had the exact same game style and results I’m sure she’d be beloved here, or at least receive much less vitriol.

It's wta too.

Only posted about rybakina when she reached qf, made reels after reels about gauff, raducanu and swaitek.

After gauff's elimination no reels about any players.

WTA you know that you can promote and make reels about more than 3 players?

I wonder if there is a clause that you can't promote more than 3 players

There is room for everyone but it's almost like they don't want certain players to be popular

The vast majority of critics here do not hate Coco. It comes across that way sometimes because it's laughable how much the media makes it seems like she's the odds on favorite to at least make the final of every event she enters. And instead of dialing back the media doubles down, perhaps thinking "if we picked her to make 3 GS finals last season, and she's a year older and better now, she must be winning a lot these soon." She gets among the best court assignments and is otherwise treated like a major title contender everywhere, but her record (1 GF final and 3 WTA250s) doesn't warrant this yet. Of course she deserves zero criticism for any of this, but if you're a fan of other players it does get a little annoying when you have someone like Pegula, who is also American but higher ranked, getting treated nothing like Coco does.

Gauff seems to relish this don't you think? She over celebrates points and opponent errors and she acted like the Peterson match was the Superbowl.

I never hated the player, I hated the broadcasting company. Those announcers are told what to say by producers, I understand they are being told what to say. But does ESPN and American broadcasting companies push Coco down our throats, absolutely. I feel I can say that because I am an American and I hear those broadcasts during the Grand Slam events.

She literally bashed her racquet against the umpire's chair this week. Of course, TC hasn't mentioned that.
