As published in The Daily Telegraph, a newspaper in the UK. I think you'll find that this is news to you all...
JENNIFER CAPRIATI overcame a far harder than expected first hurdle at the Sanex Championships to move a little closer to providing the perfect finish to her dream year.
Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva was either extravagant or careless on too many of the break points she created in the final set, allowing the American to hold on to a break in the sixth game for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Seven years on from the time when her world fell apart amid drug and shoplifting allegations, Capriati will secure the end-of-the-year top ranking just by reaching the final.
"It would mean everything," she said. "I had last week off so I was really able to let it sink in and enjoy it and not worry about anyone taking it away from me."
Even so, she will have to tighten up in her quarter-final against Julie Halard, especially on her serve, if the fairytale of her comeback Grand Slam achievements in Australia and Paris is to be crowned by her becoming world champion.
In her all-French first-round match against Amelie Mauresmo, Halard persevered in what she called "a very bad match", taking charge of the final set to win 7-5, 5-7, 6-1.
<br />Makes you wonder who writes this stuff and how much better a job could any of us do??? Still, if it's true then Jennifer could be the victim of a major surprise tomorrow.
