she seemed to have no problems with the green clay surface of Charleston and the blue clay surface of Madrid so is the problem that almost all of the current warm-up tournaments are not played in the same conditions as Roland Garros :shrug:

if so maybe this is a bigger problem for the SEWTA tour in general and Stacy needs to convince Madrid to go back to red clay or maybe we need a new Roadmap

Duh. Green clay has always been a valuable transition surface. All the greats played on it and won on it in preparation for RG. It makes sense that this suits Serena's game more, plus the events are great and convenient for her.

The problem is that a place like Madrid wants to put a dusty hard court with clumps of clay out there and call it clay. That's not good preparation and has no place on the tour if you ask me.

she hasn't won a red clay title in 9 or 10 years now, eventually you will have to admit serena just isn't that good on red clay

^^ Yup. Obviously it's well-documented that green clay isn't similar to the red stuff. But this year's Madrid clay is probably even less similar.

It's not even really the speed in Madrid that's the problem and it's certainly not the fact it's blue ( :lol: ), it's the fact that it's so shoddily-produced and slippery that, according to the players, movement is pretty similar to grass (Nadal apparently wanted to play it in his grasscourt shoes which had small studs in them for him to get a better grip, but was refused). That obviously gives an advantage to big servers like Serena, because on a surface where it's impossible for players to move, they're obviously going to find it even harder to return a good serve than ever. That's not Serena's fault so she fully deserved the Madrid title, but she and her fans were foolish if they thought she was going to retain that advantage when they moved onto real clay where it was much easier for players to move and get hold of her serve.
