She proved she can compete this season so I hope she stays on next year. I like Arantxa but I think Martina needs a new partner. They both need someone with better serves to help them out. I think Sanchez should team up with Tauziat after seeing them win the Ericsson final 6-0 6-4 against Raymond and Stubbs. Not sure who Martina should play with. Maybe Lindsay could help her out.

I certainly wouldn't mind if Arantxa and Nat teamed up, but I think Nathalie will probably stick with Po next year *if* she plays. As for Arantxa, I would like to see her playing with Lindsay - but as long as Martina is around, I am happy with that combination too!

This is not 100%, but I do believe Martina felt this year would be enough for her, she really does stretch herself with all the charity committments, ranging from Gay-rights, right through to Wildlife. She is very committed to her Annual trips to Africa, as well as certain political stances. I also know that she misses her Woodwork very much as well, So sadly, I think we have seen the last of her.

If I'm wrong (Praying here that I am), I also strongly believe a change of partner is needed, but Lindsay is definately not the right choice (A older woman, with a player who is a bit limited in movement is not going to work). the best combination I can think off ofhand would be Martina/Martina, but she is committed to Anna K, so my next choice for Martina N would be Monica Seles, what Martina could pass on to Monica about Doubles would be incredible, What Monica could give in return is a good serve and safe groundstrokes, because even at 45 Martina is still one of the best Volleyer's in the game ....just some thoughts, sorry for rambling....

not trying to start an argument here or anything but, Lindsay is not "limited in movement". She moves just fine, as all her doubles titles can attest too. She also has a bigger serve than Monica. If anyone is limited, it's Monica with the 2 hands on both sides. Lindsay is hands down a far better doubles player than Monica, although I agree she, as well as Monica could both benefit from playing with Martina.

I just read an interview where she said that it depends on if she can find a good partner

I'm sorry if anyone felt that I was doubting Lindsay as a Doubles player, as I most certainly wasn't. Lindsay has had wonderful success in doubles, but always with players that were natural beautiful movers on court. That doesn't undermine Lindsay in anyway, but with a 45 year old who is half a step slower, then Lindsay would be a hinderance, not a advantage. I really hope what you read Irma is true, because I still feel Martina has a lot to offer the game, but it does seem, by the context of what you have written that Martina/Arantxa are over.....something that I'm not terribly sad over, as I have felt that Martina has Carried Arantxa since Wimbledon and on that note, I'm running to hide.

I think both would benefit from finding stronger partners. They're both very nice tactical doubles players... but their tactics aren't enough when teams are screaming winners across the next.

Pierce is slower, but I would love to see Navratilova/Pierce in a tournament or two. But I don't think Navratilova would play with Pierce.

I wish that Shriver would come back and play some doubles with someone

Adrian?? Have you ever seen their matches? Navratilova's serve is like 40mph! And seh can't move well either. Arantxa has better movement from side to side and front to back. Arantxa had much better results with other players than she had with Martina so I think the signs point the other way. I kind of hope she teams up with Nathalie. They won Key Biscayne in only one of like 3 tourneys together!!

I agree with Adrian about Aranxta. Aranxta is a very fine doubles player but since Wimbledon watching the pair of them it is definitely Martina who is playing better at the moment. Aranxta and Nathalie sound like a good combination.

And I agree that Martina needs a younger, quicker partner. Lindsay reminds me a lot of Pam Shriver in some ways so maybe she would be a good partner. Venus and Martina could be unstoppable, but Venus is extremely unlikely to play with anyone other than Serena.

First to answer the question, yes, Martina is planning on being back next year.

Arantxa and she will no longer be partners. Both need someone with more power to complement their games and finally, the fact that they both prefer the ad court has taken it's toll on their effectiveness as a team.

Martina is on the lookout for a new partner. She said at the earliest, she expects to begin 2002 in February.

Well, I guess sadly the teammanship is over. It was awesome seeing them playing together..especially since they are both crowd pleasers and totally tore down the house when they played...but I guess different partners would help both. That tourney that Arantxa won with Nathalie was their FIRST tournament together and she also reached the SF of both tournaments that she played with Jennifer Capriati for the first time in playing together!

But I agree that both need strong partners, they both have good hands but maybe they are TOO much alike?
