Because she is sure touring like one! As I said in the summer, Anna will be healthy enough to play her annual exhibition tour. I was 100% correct. Anna is touring like a Rock star. Isn't she? She is the only tennis star who does this regularly. Venus doesn't. Martina doesn't. Lindsay doesn't. Andre doesn't. Why does Anna do it? Isn't 15 to 20 million U.S. dollars a year enough for her to live on? And on top of that, she risks injuring herself again. First, there was the South African tour with Amanda Coetzer. Then there is the charity exhibition match with Monica Seles tonight in Denver. Then she plays Capriati in Tampa on December 14th. And finally, she wraps up her exhibition tour by playing Coetzer in her new hometown of Detroit, Michigan on December 15th. I just wish she would take two months off to give her foot a real chance to heal. But she won't. She has to play these exhibitions, which are so important to her developement as a tennis player (wink wink!). I just hope Anna can stay healthy enough to play a full season next year. Udachi Anna!

P.S. - Monica Seles had won the 1996 Australian Open title. Which was her ninth grand slam singles title. She had never lost at the Australian Open. But the following December, Monica played an exhibition match an broke a finger. Thar injury made her miss the chance to continue her dominance at the 1997 Australian Open. Martin Hingis won that title. And Monica never had the chance to defend her title. All because of an unimpoertant exhibition match which led to an injury to Monica. Her career hasn't been the same since. So, you can't say exhibition matches and exhibition tournaments are harmless. Because serious injuries can occur. Even in "fun" exhibitions.

To be honest, I don't think that Anna does these exhibitions because she wants the money or is greedy. I thinks she does them because she enjoys them. She loves tennis, but hates pressure. So exhibitions are perfect for her. She gets to play the flashy tennis that she (and I!) love in a friendly atmosphere. That and the fact that she loves the adulation that she gets from the crowd.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with her playing a few exhibitions - after all she could use the match practice - but she is playing too many at the moment.

SK, you make a good point about how the exhibitions are fun for Anna, compared to the pressure filled WTA tour.

Cat, you say about Monica picking up an injury in an exhibition, the argument with that is that, you can do anything and you can pick up an injury. Anna picked up an injury in training in February, but you can't say that Anna shouldn't have trained, it's the same sort of thing.
That's the problem, you can't just pick up injuries when you are doing certain things, it can happen anytime.

I agree with SK, but also was wondering about the Detroit thing. I know Anna's boyfriend plays for the Detroit Red Wings and spends time there. She was at a game last week. Doesn't Coetzer live in the Carolina's???

I knew Anna was living here in Miami, I was just wondering why she would transfer to the frozen plains of Michigan (Not meaning to be disrespectful to Detroit ), but then again I forgot, *ahem* She's Russian.... Oh gawsh, it looks kinda cheesy following her boyfriend around like a little love-sick puppy.

Anna does not live in Detroit.. It is just a mistake from the cat in the hat in his post..

You think he might be able to get it right.. since this is about the 100th time he has brought up a very similar topic

But she does spend some time in Detroit since that where Sergei Fedorov is..

She is playing a Charity exhibition Tonight, so how much do you think she is making about of that??? try zero..

The girl missed 7 mths this year, and when she came back was way underdone in her play, so I don't see any problem in her playing some matches to get back into some form..

Of course what ever she does she is always going to cop some sort of flack, so in the long run she cannot win either way..

Cat - I really wonder is you want her to play a match at all???
I mean what ever she does there is going to be a chance of injury??

As for giving her foot 2 mths to heal?? Don't you think it might be healed Now, she says it is 100% now, so perhaps don't you think she might know alittle more about about it than you??

Playing exhos are up to the individual player. Most top players will play an exho for charity; others will do it to keep match fit and yet others will do it to try new things on the court that they normally wouldn't try in a WTA sanctioned match.

I agree with SK that Anna enjoys exhos simply because there is very little pressure on her to win. She enjoys herself and often lets go and sometimes plays amazing tennis (i.e. the Baltimore exhibition in 1999).

However, I must concur with Cat. Since Anna appears to be physically fragile, playing exhos in addition to try and play a full schedule may be too much for her body. Last year, Anna not only played 26 tournaments in singles, she also played 19 tournaments in doubles, mixed doubles at the grand slams and 5 exhibition tournaments. Playing, plus intensive training, are probably the reasons that Anna had such a severe foot injury. I Ajayres that Anna probably knows better than anyone else that her foot is 100% healed, but if she strains it she can end up injurying it yet again. I can appreciate that Anna loves to play tennis, but she needs to pace herself a little bit better.

BTW, I agree with Marshmellow. I would follow Sergei around too!

Martin, Anna's foot fracture wasn't caused by training. It was caused by over scheduling. Up until she hurt her foot in Paris, Anna had played every week of the year. In fact, she played a long 3 set doubles match the final sunday in Tokyo. Then on monday and tuesday she played exhibition matches against Ai Sugyama. Then she flew immediately to Paris, where she lost to Mauresmo in the quarters. That's where she injured her foot, and re-strained her abdominal muscle. All from over playing and over scheduling. Hopefully Anna has learned from these scheduling mistakes. And hopefully she can stay healthy, so she can play top level tennis again.

As for saying her new hometown of Detroit. I was being sarcastic. I knew it would get a rise out of people and it did!
