It is not Bogota or even Gstaad / Bad Gastein, Madrid's courts are not even 700 metres above sea level yet everyone keeps making such a big deal out of it.

Nadal's record in Madrid vs other major clay tournaments shows that there is something unique about Madrid when compared to other major clay tournaments...must probably altitude I guess

It plays faster than other clay tournaments (Madrid is also not quite humid), but the altitude factor is incredibly overrated when discussing this tournament. In Bogotá is incredibly difficult to change the ball's direction - that's certainly not the case for Madrid.

Normally the discussion about Madrid's altitude is centered on Nadal's track there, while completely understating how slow Montecarlo or Barcelona are.

Relative air density
Bogota 71.3% (high altitude balls)
Gstaad 82.3% (high altitude balls)
Bad Gastein 87.7% (high altitude balls)
Madrid 90.5% (regular balls) 👈
Strasbourg 95.2% (regular balls)
Rome 95.8% (regular balls)
RG 96.9% (regular balls)
Bastad 97.0% (regular balls)

Madrid is significantly faster than your usual clay court tournament and not slowed down with high altitude balls like Bogota/Gstaad/Bad Gastein. One of a kind.

Keys never won a match in Madrid, that's enough for me to conclude the ball must be quite difficult to control

friendly reminder zverev won here without losing a single serve in his entire run, totally unrealistic thing to achieve in other clay events, and look this crazy avg speed of alcaraz yesterday, he put an ace at 217km/h also, kid is really good but he doesn't really have that bomb serve. sinner also registered same speed today and his serve is awful, so if is altitude or not conditions are definitely different from other clay tournaments.

except that serves are measured by the speed when the ball hits the racket
