1/. Whoever won the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo has also ended the year #1! Look:

1997 - Hingis
1998 - Davenport
1999 - Hingis
2000 - Hingis
2001 - Davenport

2/. Whoever won the French Open did not win another singles tournament for the rest of that year! Look:

1997 - Majoli (Hannover; Hamburg; French Open)
1998 - ASV (Sydney; French Open)
1999 - Graf (French Open)
2000 - Pierce (Hilton Head; French Open)
2001 - Capriati (Australian Open; FC Cup; French Open)

3/. So will these freakish coincidences continue in 2002? What say u?

u can spot anythin gout cant u ?
Mmm... interesting!
well, I knew about the Roland Garros curse - not only did those players not win a title for the rest of the year, but their careers plummeted! Majoli - fell out of top 400, and despite her comeback is no longer a top player; ASV - has done very little of consequence since; Graf - career ended on bad note, with a Wimbledon final loss and then an injury; Pierce - out of top 100 now; Capriati - well, we all saw how she faded... what will happen to her next year?
The PanPacific thing I didn't know about... not that scary though, and maybe won't work this year as Venus never enters it!
hmmmmm very interesting.
Steffi`s career didn`t end on a bad note, yeah she lost the wimbledon final but she beat Venus at the tournament who is unbeaten on grass ever since and San Diego was not bad either since she only went there to test if she still liked tennis(and some other things )
Makes yuo go hmmmmmmm.............

As a tier I maybe Venus SHOULD enter the Pan
Pacific Sartrista! Good points pickup.
I don't care, Martina will win the French and Pan Pacific.

cool man!

go anna at the pan pacific, maybe if lindsay doesnt get in your way again
As Artie Johnson used to say, "Veddy interesting." You'd think the PPO people would PPublicize that. It shows how helpful a Tier I win is.
Quite interesting!
Cool statistic.
Martina will win Pan Pacific 2002 to keep the "tradition"
Hmmm weird indeed
we should ask UN to give as a grant to study this phenomenon...
Well this seems remarkable but I think in fact it isn't. There are so many tournaments -like 63 or something, that the chance of statistics like this to occur somewhere seems not so weird at all. If you look further you might find 10 other 'strange' statistics.
well although i don't believe in all this curse stuff, it is always interesting to notice such coincidences! Can someone digg a little more and tell us about this other 10 weird stats? i'm not good at that! thanx
Being from Boston (and a Red Sox fan), it's very easy for me to believe all this "curse" stuff.

I was thinking about the Roland Garros Jinx thing a while back when there was that "predicting Slams" thread in September and I didn't dare list someone for RG because of the curse.

Then I thought, well, who hasn't won a title since Roland Garros? In the current top 10 we have Capriati, Hingis and Mauresmo. The next one with a title "drought" is Henin, who won 's-Hertogenbosch a couple of weeks after RG. All four had pretty good clay seasons (they were the semifinalists in Berlin...and all are former Junior RG champs). They also seemed to like Rebound Ace this year. Is it a surface thing? Were they just tired? Too much pressure perhaps?

Then there's the bigger fact that Hingis never won RG as a big girl and seems to be in a worse rut than Capriati.

OMG! Would you just not want to win the french open(!)

Jen I think tired herself out after FO, she didn't play the same tennis after that. I hope she doesn't tun out to be like Majoli
