2002
SANEX WTA
RANKINGS
Nov. 2001

The Sanex WTA Rankings is the worldwide computer ranking for women’s professional tennis. It’s a ranking system that reflects both a player’s performance in Tournament play (Round Points) as well as her record against other players (Quality Points). The ranking system is a Fifty-two week, cumulative system in which the number of Tournament results that comprise a player’s ranking is capped at Seventeen Tournament results for Singles and Eleven Tournament results for Doubles. The results used to determine the player’s ranking are the Tournaments that have yielded the player’s highest Ranking (Round and Quality) Points over the past Fifty-two weeks. The rankings determine player acceptances and seedings for all Tournaments. The Sanex WTA Rankings are computed and published weekly by the Sanex WTA Tour from its Worldwide Operations office in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA.

Tier II lower Tier pts less than they have been in past.

they have reduced points for Tier III and Tier IV wins so that will have a drastic effect on the ranks especially to the low tier specialists.

Tier V remain same.

Indian Wells/Miami as expected have got a big boost in points.

This is going to get pretty complicated especially if the prize money isn't listed or changed .

Slam points ..... don't like the .5 pts for 2d rd qual loser , wish they kept the slams whole points.

I see they brought back those damn 1/4 points. We're going to have decimals all over the place. And now, instead of just checking what Tier a tourney is, we'll have to check the prize money. They've replaced 7 main Tier categories with 11. Whoever wins the Australian will have their championship worth more than the other 3 slams until they come up. Meanwhile, anyone who's defending anything from a regular Tier II ($585K) down will see their points drop, even if they're successful. That will quiet the critics.

Are the quality points the same, or have they changed too? Send me a copy, Egg. I'll save you a trip to my profile: [email protected]

Basically they have divided tier Is into 3 categories based on money prize.

If the money prizes have the same tendencies as in 2001, that would mean they will be divided as follows:
1) $2,000,000: Ericsson and Indian Wells
2) $1,325,000: Family Circle, Italian Open and Canadian Open
3) $1,224,000: Toray Pan Pacific, Berlin, Moscow or Zurich.

None of the tournaments listen in cat. 2 and 3 had a prize money like that in 2001 but it's safe to assume they will rise it in 2002. The 3 tournaments mentioned had a greated money prize than the other 4, as Berlin has a 64 players draw they main join the club.

As far as tier 2s, they are divided in two categories and only San Diego and Brazil have bigger money prizes.

The big question is, will they leave the 2001 point as they are and they will be being replaced by the new ones or will they recalculate the ranking points based on the new system?

The last possibilty is very unlikely as the money prizes might change, I think they will be dropping the 2001 points normally and adding the new ones, that will make a big difference in the GSs and Indian Wells and Ericsson.

Great Q Fingon.
I think its good that the points have been boosted but I think it is wrong to Spilt the points for each Tier.
It is simpler to say Winner for tier 1 is xyz rather than saying for some tier 1's you get xyx but for otehrs its like yyy

Re-organizing the points is great because I couldn´t understand that thing in the past as well
The differences had to be worked a bit more concerning the tier-status and giving the GS more points

If we could delete the winning points of the top10 and their events 2001 it might be interesting who is no1 to 10 then

I cannot see the WTA re-organising the points as it will make some big changes to the ranks and the top spot would change in the close season and that would be very bad PR for the WTA

Can you imagine a new #1 when there is no tennis being played.

Some analysis

I. Points for tournament wins compared to points for Grand slam wins

a) Championship win

1. Old ranking: 75 % of GS win

2. New ranking: 74,6 % of GS win

b) Tier I win

1. Old ranking: 50 % of GS win

2.1 New ranking: 50 % of GS win ($2,000,000)
2.2 New ranking: 46,2 % of GS win ($1,325,000)
2.3 New ranking: 42,3 % of GS win ($1,224,000)

c) Tier II win

1. Old ranking: 38,5 % of GS win

2.1 New ranking: 33,8 % of GS win ($650,000)
2.2 New ranking: 30 % of GS win ($585,000)

d) Tier III win

1. Old ranking: 29,8 % of GS win

2.1 New ranking: 22,3 % of GS win ($225,000)
2.2 New ranking: 18,5 % of GS win ($170,000)

e) Tier IV win

1. Old ranking: 26,9 % of GS win

2. New ranking: 14,6 % of GS win

f) Tier V win

1. Old ranking: 15,4 % of GS win

2. New ranking: 12,3 % of GS win

Remarkable changes. The GS's really have in increased in comarison. Also see tier IV: this year more than 1/4 of GS, next year only 1/7.

II. Comparison of current top 3 with top 3 according to the new system.

Current ranking:

1. Lindsay 4902 p.
2. Jen 4892 p.
3. Venus 4128 p.

Ranking according to the new points would be:#

1. Jen 5356 p.
2. Lindsay 5154 p.
3. Venus 4549 p.

Please note that I have used Eggy's schedule posted some days ago. But there weren't any tier I's with $1,325,000 so the ranking owuld probably in fact slightly different. But the positions would still be the same.

Eggy, when I asked if the WTa was going to recalculate the point I was thinking of the beginning of 2002.

However I don't think they will. Some of the rules apply to the way tournaments will be in 2002, for example, there are not tier 1s with a money prize of 1325000 (except Indian Wells and Key Biscayne that have more than that) one can assume that Family Circle,Canadian Open and Rome would fall in that category because now they give more money prize than the others, but it's just and assumption, the table was clearly done thinking of next year's calendar.

Thank you, Eggy, for alerting us to this important info!!! I have printed it out from the WTA site.

Thanks to turt and GoDominique for further help in understanding the implications.

I was surprised that I still can't find the tournament schedule for 2002 at the WTA site -- can anyone help?
