... which type of player will it be? A surprise winner? Or a veteran that was expected to do it sooner? There has been at least one new winner each of the past 5 years, and the pattern seems to alternate, with surprises in odd years, and ones who were expected to do so sooner coming through in even years.

1995- Pierce-OZ surprise
1997- Hingis- OZ- a mild surprise
1997 Majoli- RG- surprise
1998- Novotna- vet finally winning
1998- Davenport- US- could count as either
1999- S.Williams- US- surprise
2000- V.Williams- WM- sort of a vet- expected to win sooner
2001- Jen- OZ - surprise, Was expected to win when younger, but given up on.

2002- vet=? surprise=?

Only one Vet and that will be a big suprise as well.. Sandrine Testud ( chances to win a slam less than 10%)

Suprises.... Kim Clijsters/Justine Henin/Amelie Mauresmo/Jelena Dokic ( if you can call them that)

a bigger suprise would be Mary Pierce.

And for me ....a dream a Russian winners

I agree, out of the vets that haven't won, Sandrine is the only one that can keep up with these girls.

If Kim, Justine, Amelie win I wouldn't be surprised, though.

Hmmm for me Kim and Juju would no longer be surprise winners (If they had won their finals this year then yes it would have been a surprise but next year no.)

MGM will surprise you all next year

Would it be alos a surprise when Martina would win AO next year after her injury??

The story of a vet finally winning would be Conchita at the French. I doubt it will happen, but then I didn't seriously think Steffi would win in 1999 after such a poor clay court season.
Who knows?
Hey...even better would be Anke coming out of retirement and winning the US Open!!! Guess that's too much fantasy though!
We can dream!

A sort of surprise would be if Serena win Roland Garros (which is not Impossibçe) defeating Monica Seles 6-1 6-0 !
Hm not surprise for me, but for other people would be!

I am starting to not consider this a surprise, cause Serena can win in Paris

Big surpise: Iroda Tulyaganova/Lina Kranaroutskaya

I'd be surprised: Jelena Dokic

Mild surprise: Amelie Mauresmo

I wouldn't call that a surprise: Kim Clijsters/Justine Henin

Surprise vet: Sanchez-Vicario. (Sadly, I think I'd put her ahead of Sandrine, just cause I don't think I've really seen Arantxa choke. Whereas Sandrine... )

Would you be surprised: Anna Kournikova
