Tennis fans will soon be able to tune into tennis 24 hours a day. The Tennis Channel, the all-tennis network, announced its programming plans for its third-quarter 2002 launch. The Tennis Channel plans to televise more than one thousand hours of live tennis tournaments ranging from ATP and WTA Tour events to the Champions Tour to World TeamTennis to Intercollegiate Tennis events.

In addition, the network will televise classic matches from its library of tennis featuring Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova among other Grand Slam greats. Virtually all of the channel's content will be original programming, consisting of about 40 percent tournament play, 40 percent instruction and 20 percent news and personality programming.

"We are happy to announce relationships with some of America’s greatest tennis events," said the Tennis Channel President and Founder Steve Bellamy. "Tennis Channel viewers will get to see the game's most colorful players: Sampras, Agassi, Rafter, the Williams sisters, Kournikova, Capriati and Davenport, playing on the clay at Amelia Island, the grass courts of the Hall of Fame Championships, indoors at the Kroger St. Jude, the hard courts at LaCosta and many more."

The network has obtained the rights to televise several American tournaments including the Acura Classic held in LaCosta, California, the Bausch & Lomb at Amelia Island, Florida and The Bank of the West Classic at Stanford.

"We are at the beginning of an amazing decade for the sport," Bellamy said. "There is an incredible cache of seasoned talent joined by arguably the best crop of new players — Andy Roddick, James Blake, Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin and more — in the history of the game."

it'll be interesting to see, how many cable systems actually get it. NY cable system sucks. So like Brian, I may not see it until Steffi's kid is of age.

Pea <img src="frown.gif" border="0"> I don't want to think about that!

It's about time we get a tennis channel. I shall now begin to drive my cable company crazy, asking for them to pick it up.

Egg, count yourself lucky that you don't get The Golf Channel. (I guess the more exciting Paint Drying Channel was too expensive?) As one scribe pointed out, The Golf Channel is redundant. "Who needs another channel showing middle-aged men in bad clothes, speaking in a jargon only they can understand? We already have C-SPAN."
