I Think We Saw Two Very Special Things Tonight:

1. Francesca Schiavone.
2. Daniela Hantuchova.

Yes, they both lost their respective matches. But how impressive were they both in defeat. Schiavone was up early on Seles and came back late and almost made things very tricky for Monica. Daniela took a set off of Venus and nearly nearly won the match.

I think they are both *the* players to watch in 2002.

By all accounts Daniela is one to watch. She played well she played smart. She is definetely one to watch. That third set was a thriller.

However, Venus had to take it easy to make sure she does not hurt herself in the first set. But - for the injury, this battle would have been 6-4 6-3 thriller or maybe 7-5 6-3.
Schiavone may not be a teenager, but she's still 'one to watch' this year. Looking at the current top 20, it's clear that to make it to the elite whilst still a teenager is actually quite rare. Testud, Coetzer, Farina Elia, Shaughnessy etc. were late bloomers compared with Hingis, the Williamses, Clijsters etc. Schiavone may not be a future Slam champion, but this could be her breakthrough year. I'd say she'll end up as a Testud/Van Roost type player who is etched permanently in the top 20, makes the occasional rare foray into the top 10 and is always 'dangerous'.

Hantuchova, on the other hand, IS something special. A lot of people are saying that Venus was not 100%, and that a 100% Venus would have flattened Daniela. I disagree - Venus herself noted that since they last played, Daniela has improved immensely - but these people seem to have forgotten that Daniela may have been healthy, but she hasn't even begun to reach 100% of her potential.

And I do agree with Dawn: this has all the makings of an epic rivalry. I for one hope it happens.

Playa was refering to posters like you who tried to overstate Daniella's accomplishments against a less than 100% Venus thereby deminishing Venus' effort, and heart in fighting through an injury. One can take nothing away from Ms Hantuchova she played an excellent match, just not against an healthy opponent.

Every major newpaper has account after account of the match and it's only people like you who viewed a 100% healthy Venus.

Would you like me to post them for you?
Dawn

I'm not an imposter

Haters are (for me) V****y and all antiWilliams fans who were saying
nasty things about Williams not necessarily in this thread but in many others for Exemple "Venus Vs Daniela live score"
OR "Can Daniela Beat Venus" While ignoring
that player like Jen Cap is in the same situation (injuried)

back to tennis ...Those who said Daniela was very,Very and very
close to beat Venus are making me laugh

twice venus had the opportunities to finish her off but
silly mistakes brought Daniela into the game

then they were both tied at 4-4 Daniela was serving but was quickly broken and the rest is history that was the coup de grace

I give her credits for putting up such a great fight but IMHO i can't
call that "very, very close to beat venus....."

Dawn ...once again I didn't like what you called me

regards

Playa: any match which goes to 4-4 in the final set is a very tough one, and the loser in such a match has to be described as 'very close to winning'. Because she was - only two games away.

The 'Can Hantuchova beat Venus?' thread wasn't started to hate on Venus. It was started by a Daniela fan who was interested in seeing what others thought about his/her fave. And, unlike Jennifer's opponents after she said she was injured - Talaja and Tu - Daniela's been touted as 'one to watch' for about a year now. She's had some impressive results, and she has great game. The match with Venus would have been interesting whether Venus was injured or not, given Hantuchova's immense potential.
Well, I will be watching Francesca's results this year. As I did last year.

I just hope she does push on, because this isn't the first time she's been 'touted'.
What I really do not get is that why some poster cannot accept the fact that Venus lost a set. God, is that really that embarassing for Venus to lose a set that some kind of reasons has to be made. All the threads regarding can Daniela beat Venus, is for poster who is interested in analysing the game and see how Daniela can match up against Venus, not directly towards Venus. I for one is very interested in some analysis of the game, (so is many people who is drawn into this board because of tennis). If someone start a thread by saying my fav player Monica is gonna lose in the fourth round or saying things like she has no chance against Venus, so be it as long as I can see a valid point. So please, stop being so paranoid and think that all post about Venus is either 100% support or 100% against Venus.

Not necesserily may be I'm exaggerating but I believe that a 100% fit Venus would've roll over Daniela .

On the other hand a 80% fit Venus and 100% fit and inspired Daniela is a very interesting match.
wong: i agree with you

like TBE said -- if you are fit enough to start, then you are fit enough to finish ...
So, if you're tall, fast, agile, hit big off both sides, volley well, aren't intimidated or her sister and Venus's serve isn't working, you can give yourself chances to win. This isn't news. It just doesn't often occur.
I did not once say anything nasty about Venus during this match. In fact, if you read my post assesing the match, you'd realize I actually said some nice things about Venus. I did not even cheer anybody on in the scores thread. I simply congratulated both players on a good match after it was over. Maybe you should pay attention to posts more instead of jumping to conclusions all the time.

In short:
Daniela Hantuchova pushed Venus Williams to three sets. It was awesome for her true fans to see her playing so well. It was also awesome to see Venus stepping up and playing a good, inspired match. Whether she is injured or not is up for debate. That's not what we're talking about here.

also, I can "hate" any player I choose. Just like you dislike Daniela, I don't like Venus. However, you should not take anything away from Daniela. I did not take anything away from Venus when she won this match. Just because Venus defeated her easily 7 months ago on grass, doesn't mean anything... a lot can change in that amount of time.

itsallaboutinis: Excuse me.. but who are you to say what I saw and what I didn't?

Oops doesn't really matter...I already did!
I didn't overdramatize Daniela's effort. If you actually saw the match (which you most likely didn't, they you're talking) you'd see Daniela played very well against the best player in the world. If you look at the stats.... 37 winners for Venus, 29 for Daniela... most players pick up their points on Venus' mistakes but Daniela was actually earning her points! Like I said, the match and the stats speak for themselves. I don't care what the newspapers say because they are extremely biased. Of course they are going to make out the world's top player to be playing awful when she drops a set to the 32nd seed. It has to be expected.

I also should add: It was very nice to see Venus fighting and determined. I'm not taking anything away from her efforts at all. It was a tough match but she fought and won it. It was a good workout for her, she usually doesn't have to fight in matches. Maybe she was injured, but that's not an excuse.. she went out there and played... and won. I don't see what the big deal is.

Itsallvenus hit the nail on the head.. Sheesh everyone knows Vanity is A WILLIAMS HATER:)

VANITY YOUR A WILLIAMS HATER, and NOBODY IS GOING to CHANGE OPINIONS ABOUT YOU. YOU BROUGHT YOUR ASS ON THIS BOARD WITH AN AGENDA SO DEAL WITH IT NOW!!

VANITY IS A HATER !:) Peace out HATER and don't bother popping back in SPEWING your HATE becasue I am OUTTI. Talk to my hand. Peace:)

Vanity=HATER
I can dislike who I chose. I make it no secret that I don't like Venus, so what are you trying to prove? I don't care what people think about me. Are you here to talk about women's tennis? Sure doesn't seem like it...

How old are you, Dawn Marie? 12? 13? Because you sure act like it.
Vanity

I think you just made my point!

It was an awesome match. Daniella played her ass...(well what little she has)...off, but nobody and when I say nobody I'm including Davenport Seles and Capriatti hits nearly 30 winners while playing Venus. She did! First thing I say to that is great!

Now I ask...what has she got that Cap Seles or Lindsay doesn't:confused:
Now I ask...what has she got that Cap Seles or Lindsay doesn't
You're right. We don't know that yet... she hasn't been around long enough for us to find out.
Vanity, are YOU here to talk about women't tennis? Yes, we know you don't like Venus, and you continue to make it known everytime you post a thread. All you do is jump around from thread to thread insulting Venus and cheering for every ass who's competing against her. Do you even have a favorite player? Or do you just like anybody who's on the other side of Venus? You seem to be letting your dislike consume you.
Excuse me, hail venus, but if you read threads that were non-williams you'd know I support many other players. I haven't spoken much about the sisters until today. Please read before you jump to conclusions.
I don't have to jump to conclucions when everytime I turn around, you are in a WILLIAMS THREAD bashing Venus. Hell, I draw my conclusions from you!

Furthermore, I'm a WILLIAMS FAN, so I basically stick to threads concerning them. I also know what you really are so I usually stir clear of you. Excuse me if I don't give a shit about your other interests besides the ones concerning Venus.:p
