... but I can't believe what Jon Wertheim writes about her in his mailbag:

'As for Seles, her gazillion admirers will roast me as usual, but let's be honest: Her better days are long past. Sure, with little to defend she might improve her ranking by a notch or two. But the gulf that separates her from the Williamses/Lindsay Davenport/Capriati/Kim Clijsters axis is a wide one. Seles will rack up points (and, of course, cash) winning Tier IIIs. But beating the Henrieta Nagyovas of the world only gets you so far. Insofar as her being a bona fide contender at a major, I don't see that happening.'

I always get disconnected, so I will post this and comment it after that.

Monica has proven she is up there with the top players most of the time (not the Williams') BUT I don't think she'll ever be a top 5 player - the gap is too wide at the moment.

OH MY GOD!!!!! what a comment.

The only players that Monica has problems so far were Lindsay & Venus.

Monica has strong game period. What ticks me off is that all she has to do is REALLY get fit. I mean 100% tip top the best shape of her life fit ,and the slams and imho the #1 ranking will come.

What I think Monia should do is not play so many tourneys in a row, kinda get hungary for the slams. She was obviously tired during the US Open. Monica Seles though is showing signs of improvement in her game. She beat great players and will continue to do so.

Like I already said on another board wait till Monica would win Australia or any other big title mr Wertheim would jump on her bandwagon right away.

It's really a shame that some people are writing off Monica. I'm not a Monica cheerer myself, but I admire her game and have a lot of respect for her as a person aswell. I think this summer (before the US Open), we saw what Monica can do when in good physical condition. She beat plenty of solid players this year, and I think it's really unfair to say she won't win a slam at this point. She did struggle a little bit more at the first half of the year, but that was due to injuries. She missed two slams, and still finished ranked in the top 10. A loss to Capriati in Australia was nothing to be ashamed about considering she went on to win, and the loss to Bedanova in my opinion, was due to Monica simply pushing herself too soon this summer. She played way too many weeks in a row and eventually she ran out of gas against a very consistent, talented player who made her hit a lot of balls.

I don't know if Monica will win another slam, but I don't think she should be counted out. Since her return this summer, she beat the likes of Capriati, Serena, Hingis, Henin, and Dokic, right there are 5 top 10 players. I think that's proof she can hang with the top players still, it's just a matter of staying fit, staying healthy (avoiding injuries), and perhaps improving her scheduling a bit better so that she can peak at the slams.

Here's the link: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/2001/11/26/mailbag/

Kim so much better than Monica ? I don't remember that Kim was out for more than 4 months.
If we just look at the results after her injury, she has lost only against 4 players: Serena, Venus, Lindsay and Daja (OK, I think you can blame Monica for playing too much to go fresh into the US Open). But before the US Open, she was definitely at least the 4th best player. She lost to Venus once and twice to Lindsay, with Serena she was tied 1-1. So you can even put her on 3 with Serena. She was definitely better than Jennifer (had better results and beat her in straight sets) and Martina (beat her twice). Kim won a tournament against Lindsay, but her other results weren't as good. So where's that gulf ???
And it sounds like Monica is only greedy and always playing tier III's with no top players. I don't think that is true. she likes hard-courts and doesn't like to play in Germany, so why not ? And she won those events and didn't leave early with the appearance money.
I don't think that she will win another slam either, but that's just my opinion. I don't think it's impossible. But I will make a bold prediction: Next year, Monica will be ranked higher than Jennifer. I really think that. Jennifer will go down, and Monica will move up. And Monica can definitely compete with Kim on any day.
Maybe she will surprise all of us in Australia.

I don't think Wertheim dislikes Monica. It's just that he refuses to admit he was wrong about her, and will continue to display skepticism after she wins her next Slam.

Monica is one of the all time greats imo. She still is a formidable opponent. But she cannot defeat either Sister or Davenport consistently. People are quick to point to her victory over Serena this summer but that was her first victory over either sister ever. Serena came right back and defeated Monica in their next match. But given the right draw and conditions could win another slam.

An insult to Monica who posted some really big wins this year (and not even to mention for Henrieta Nagyova who is being misused as example)

Yeah, this must be the same Henrieta Nagyova that took JenCap to 3 sets at AussieOpen last year and had I think matchpoints or close to matchpoints against JenCap?

I don't take anything that spills out of Jon Wertheim's mailbag too seriously. The vibe I get from him is that he's anti-Monica and anti-Yevgeny (I get the impression that he can't resist writing how those two do anything for money.) He gets paid to write about tennis but doesn't always do his homework (lets some readers do his work for him). I can think of several posters on this board who could probably do a better job than he does.

Statements like his make me want to see Monica win big time in Oz.

And that gulf? Um, how about Capriati? And Henin shot from 45 to 5 in less than 7 months!

Still, he's not as bad as ESPN's Tom Friend.

J. Wertheim (whoever he is) always have a wrong prdiction.

I think Monica will win a GS this year probaly FO.

She insulted Jenn last year when Jenn said that She can still slug with the Williams, Hingis and Davenport. Then after that she won the FO.

She predicted that Venus will win FO but instead won WO and USO.

he is the female version of Chris Evert
