By Richard Pagliaro - Germany gained entry into the Fed Cup final today, but the Germany team will compete in the event without its top-ranked player. Anke Huber, ranked No. 19, announced she will not join the German team when it travels to Madrid, Spain for the Fed Cup final, November 7-11th.

The 26-year-old Huber — who originally announced she planned to retire following the 2002 Australian Open — has since said she will conclude her 13-year career after the Sanex WTA Tour Championships in Munich this week. Huber is unwilling to postpone her retirement plans until after the Fed Cup final.

"I had said that this would be my last tournament if I qualified and it remains that way," Huber said. "I have told Fed Cup chief Markus Schur that I would not take part."

Germany replaced the United States in the Fed Cup final after the two-time defending Fed Cup champion withdrew due to concerns over safety in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on America and concerns over security surrounding the international crisis. Huber, who gained entry into the season-ending tournament after Venus Williams withdrew due to an irritated left wrist, plays Wimbledon finalist Justine Henin in Wednesday's first round.
