I watched a tape of the Wimbledon final the other day. And on it Martina N said that it would be a great shame if Venus retired now or with in the next year as nobody had seen the best of her yet.

I just wondered if the tennis experts  on this board agreed with this. And how much better do you think she can get

She has gone from good (2000 ,2001) to bad (2002)to worse (2003) . I can ONLY see her going further down as far as her tennis is concerned !

Not trying to be rude here, but given that she was oft-injured and marked by Serena, that comment is silly.

*Wait a minute. . ..I think I just replied to a hater. Did I? Can anybody confirm this?*

bad V def Juju saving matchpoints at amelia. Straight sets her at Wimby, while taking her best shot: the backhand and reducing it to AMATEUR level.

Worse V: straigt sets Juju again at the Oz and beats Kim while being injured at Wimby.

Why does that say about the current no.1 and 2?!

Venus can get better. improve that second-serve and forehand.

venus has martina hingis sydrome: vast potential, prodigal daughter of tennis who had things come naturally and easy when compared to other players. Yes they both put in work and trained hard but it came naturally to them so when they were forced to come up with a second gear the engine stalled.... martina couldnt come up with that second gear to beat the power players and venus has it much easier because there is only one player she struggles with her sister.

the key to venus achieving her true potential? Technique. She must rebuild her serve to get rid of the kink she has and the head problem. She must improve her forehand and volleys and she must attack the net at all cost.

Out of all those the serve is the biggest liability. If venus shared serena 's serve their matches would be more even.

Martina N. is absolutley correct. The problems with Venus' game are few and relatively simple to correct, I'm surprised that She hasn't corrected all yet, but in her defense She has improved some things. If Venus can improve the consistancy on her second serve, volleys, and forehand by 20% she would dominate the tour. Her confidence level would be through the roof. She would lose about 3 matches each year! That said, I believe that if Venus was not injured she would be kicking assess left, right, and center on WTA tour!!

The rest of the tour excluded Serena...her days of dominating Serena are a thing of the past.

I wouldn't be so sure.
You seem very convinced that Venus can dominate Serena again. I´m telling you: next year it´s gonna flip flop. Serena struggled with Venus because she couldn´t look past the sister-thing. Venus is probably struggling with Serena right now, because now that Serena has gotten over the sister-block she can play her game freely and Venus can´t overlook her protecting-love thing either...

Once she gets that one victory against Serena again, it will all be different. Serena is over that and is willing to fight for the win....even against Venus. Venus will eventually get there. In fact there last two matches gave clearly indications that Venus is getting there too and that Serena is willing to take that challenge heads on.

So, I don´t think the other is gonna beat the other six times in a row anymore. It´s like with any other opponent...how many players have beaten either Serena or Venus twice in a row?!

You seem so sure the series won't flip flop like it did before.

Indeed! I can´t see Serena losing that many times again to Venus. She has developed too much for that too happen...

Just for the record I hope I am wrong. But ever since Serena got on this roll against Venus and got over the mental thing, I have feared what would happen to Serena mentally if Venus started to beat her again. I hope she can handle it.

Nope, that wasn´t the biggest mental test for Serena. That was the ´01 u.s.open qrtr against Lindsay. If she had lost that match, where she was always ahead, then I don´t think she would have recovered. Her reaction after that match tells how relieved she was. She had already blown two qrtrs she should have won, if she had blown that one too....

Coming back to Venus and Serena. wimbledon showed me exactly what would happen if Serena was to lose to Venus again. She would just buckle down and come out stronger the next time.

This was the first time since u.s. open ´01 where she was behind in a slam final and, Venus injured and all, she raised her level pretty much compared to the first set. I don´t think she will get too upset by a loss to Venus....she knows that Venus sure has the game to beat her pretty much any time and that vice versa is true too.

She was behind, but Venus was injured and couldn't last and Serena knew. I am talking about Serena losing a match, not being down.

Huh?? What huh?? I refered to that match, ´cause you said you don´t know how a loss to Venus would affect Serena mentally. I said that a loss to Venus isn´t the biggest mental test to Serena anymore and that she has already faced and conquered her greatest mentall challenge.

That´s why if she were to loss to Venus, it wouldn´t be a big deal. She knows that Venus can beat her anytime and vice versa. I don´t think that she will suddenly lose confidence or anything.

It´s Venus who has to get a win fast, ´cause she is losing confidence to me...that talk after the Oz wasn´t good at all....otoh her play at Wimbledon should have given her boost too.

...And I'm sorry but whatever refered to Venus as "bad" in 2002 deserves a smack upside the head! :fiery:

In 2002, She won so many matches and won more titles than any of her previous years Gold Coast, Paris Indoors, Antwerp, Amelia Island, Stanford, San Diego, New Haven.

So you tell me how she was bad in 2002? By Losing the FINALS of 3 GRANDSLAMS that year?
