I was just wondering how long people on the board have been following and/or playing tennis.

I have been playing tennis for 17 years and following tennis for 14 years.

I got my first racket from my brother 7 years ago, but it's only in the last couple of years that I began to play more often and take my game seriously.
Same pattern with watching, I would see a match here or there in the 90s, but didn't really follow the tour closely until USO 99.

I've been playing for thousands of years, although I prefer to call it handball. We used to play in Tinnis, Egypt, a small town on the Nile. The Greeks and Roman played, too.

I've been watching since the French started playing in the 10th or 11th century A.D.

I started following tennis in 1971 at the U.S. Open -- Chris Evert made the semifinals and I was hooked. I began playing tennis in 1972, hitting the ball against the wall of my house, against the wall in my living room and finally against the wall in an elementary school auditorium in front of my house, which my family owned. I probably didn't get on a court until 1975, and my court visits were infrequent until 1977. Ever since, I've been at it. In fact, this evening I play a second round match in a city tournament of a K-Swiss-sponsored singles league -- against the No. 4 seed who drubbed me in the regular season!

I began following tennis in 1989, but have been interested in it since about 1987. That was when I watched my first GS match. In 1988, I watched the television coverage of 2 Grand Slam tournaments. In 1989, I found out that there were more than 4 tournaments a year. LOL.

I started with tennis lessons when I was 8. I played juniors until I was 12. I was offered a chance to take it further, but being only 12, I wanted to hang out with my friends, go to school, and do kid stuff, not realizing the potential that tennis could've been for me. As it turned out, I didn't grow nearly as tall as most players should anyway. (I'm 5'5").

But since last year (I used to play with friends, for my school, and with my dad), I've been playing at a tennis club, where I now play team competitions every weekend. We (well, maybe it's just me) like to train at least three times a week (I wish it was 5 but strings aren't cheap and I hit the ball pretty hard and with a lot of topspin) and play against other clubs on Sunday.

The season started about a month and a half ago but I've been practicing weekly during the off-season. I'm on something of a winning streak at the moment. I've won all 3 of my singles matches, and helped to win all 3 of my doubles matches so far in the season. And I hope it continues this Sunday.

I am the most winningest person on my team with a 100% win-loss record. Whoo-hoo!

I have been following tennis since 1993 (I think) when I was bored one day and switched on tv to find Steffi Graf playing a match in one of the Grand Slam finals. Did not know how the points were counted that time. But Steffi Graf's game blew me away and I was hooked eversince.

The first whole match I sat through was the Navratilova-Evert-Lloyd Wimbledon final of '82. I remember Martina's skirt almost falling off and that combined with her very exotic name back then made me her big fan. I was only about 7 years old. I vaguely remember the Chris-Hana final from the year before. As for playing I reletlessly hit balls against a wall from a very young kid but joined a tennis club at age of 12 and now play in the top league for this country ( not that that's saying a lot!!)
