she can't pass Kim before the open, but she might after. Kim has tons of points to defend at the end of the year, Serena will be back up there if she plays in the Fall and does well, Justine also has a big chance, but Indoor season is her off peak season, but will see !! it would be fun! plus Venus could get back on top if only she plays more

Kim is 1000 points ahead so Henin can't pass her before the Open

To defend for the rest of the year

Kim
750 in LA
FIldrstadt 378
Luxembourg 200 (17th result)
Tokyo 210 (but isn't defending, but has a 170 performance in Scottsdale to replace it)

Not counting
Leipzig 94
Zurich 107
US Open 122
Montreal 48

Henin
US Open 122
Zurich 169
Linz 311
LA 144
Leipzig 127

Not counting
Filderstadt & New Haven 1
Montreal 89

So Kim has 1538 points to defend and henin has 873 points to defend

And ofcourse you can't discount Serena who has to defend
US Open 1040
Leipzig 291
Tokyo 264
LA 484

so a total of2079 points and she can't defend her 1040 at the Open

So I guess yo can decide for yorself cause there are the numbers, and it is a bit objective to say who will defend her points, who won't, who will do better.

With all points till the end of the year removed it is

Kim 4671 (currently has 6039)
Henin 4134 (currenlty has 5007)

Kim adds on a 170 point performance in Scottsdale when the others are removed it is currently her 18th result, Henin doesn't add any resluts.

Essentially, Justine is the only one who has any sort of chance of catching her before the end of the year, and even if she does, it would certainly be unlikely before the Tour Championships. So she is nearly assured of passing Arantxa and Venus weeks at #1.

Even if she does lose it at the Championships, I think that is 13 weeks. Arantxa has 12 and Venus has 11. If Justine can't outperform her at the US Open, then the race is over for this year. All other players will be pretty much out of the running until the Claycourt season.

bandbou - How is Kim assured of year-end #1? If Justine wins the Open and the Championships, she could easily end the year at #1. Right now she is only a few hundred points behind Kim in the Race. She could pass Kim with good results in Toronto and New York.

Oh definitely she could, however it is still more likely she won't. Your could not only requires things from Justine, Kim would have to help her a little herself.

Only said that because Kim´s better on hardcourts than Juju, isn´t it?! Now after San Diego....I don´t even know about THAT anymore.

Ranking after US open

We already know about Serena's injury
Kim = 6039 points (same points after Montreal)
Serena 5995 points currently - 1040 points
Justine + 100 points after Montreal = 5107 punten.
Davenport = 3586.....She still has to defend the New Haven final points
Venus= 3536 - 296 New Haven = 3240 points

After the US open:

I did take the average points from the winners, finalist en semi-finalist from the previous three Grand Slams.

Venus Williams

ans - read my post again; I was talking about the Race points. What Kim did last fall won't matter come November this year. Justine is close to Kim in terms of points earned this year, and by the end of the Open, Justine could lead Kim in the Race.
