... in order to say she's had an 'adequate' OZ 2002?

2nd question.

How far does your fave have to advance, in order to say she's had a adequate OZ 2002, as a component of an attempt to be the year end #1?

These are questions you can approach a lot of ways.

For example, Venus Williams.

Her OZ record is pretty slender. QF '98, QF '99, DNP '00, SF '01. If Venus makes it to the semis and loses, it's still matches best she's ever done here. No improvement, despite the prep tourney. But no backsliding against a stronger field.

Adequate.

Buty as a component of a shot at year end #1, the semis are fine. A little disappointing, since its a hard court tourney, but livable.

Jenn, OTOH, IMHO, has to make the final. Anything less will be a considerable disappointment. As a piece of a run at year end #1, the semis is fine for Jenn. But if she comes out and duplicates last January she'll scare some people. Sandrine took a lot of Jenn's mystique at the end of the season.

Justine is under less pressure. Basically all she has to do is defend her ranking. She made the 4r at OZ and the US in 2001, so hard court clearly aren't her best thing. If she makes the QF's, she improves on past performance, and defends her rankings. The $r would be good enough, but a GS semi and a final last summer raised the bar.

Those are just some of my opinions. Gotta say, this may not be a thread for those who can't imagine your fave failing. I'd really like to hear how peole think various players should do.

I expect Serena to win her if she wants to have a shot at the year end number 1. If not, I think an appearance in the finals is sufficient.

As for Venus, if she wants to reach the year end number 1, she'd need to reach the finals. And an adequate performance would be to reach the finals.

For Monica it depends.

If she is not a top 8 seed, then the Quarters has to be considered acceptable, considering that she could meet absolutely anyone in the 4th round.

If she is a top 8 seed, she needs to reach the Semis to be "acceptable", as that matches her 2nd worst result there ever, but surpasses her results of the past few Slams.

For year end #1, she needs a Final here.

I think if Kim reach the quarters it`s okee but I hope she can make the breaktrough and win the title

I think Serena should at least reach the semis, I just hope she doesn`t draw Venus in the quarters.

For Arantxa, I'd say 4th round would be adequate. Rebound Ace is a bit slower, has a higher bounce, and the hot conditions play well to Arantxa's game. Considering she's one of the top 16 seeds, I'd be disappointed for her to not hold her seeding probably.

As for adequacy in comparison to reaching #1, well I don't think that is very realistic for Arantxa at this point, but if she were to have any hope at #1 she'd probably need to win the title, or make the finals considering she's not likely to pick up too many points indoors, or enough on grass.

my fave's anna k, and comparing her result in melbourne last year, i don't think she can really match that QF appearance....she can have a very hard draw from the first round...

the third round would be nice enough......

Well for Monica Seles I would be hoping for at least semis if she's had a good winter. Really an onfire Venus is the only player I don't think Monica has a great chance of taking out.
As for Mirjana Lucic if she turns up to play that will tell me about her intentions to play the year. If she's fit as well then I can wish for her winning matches.

Given her run of injuries last year (all feeding off of one major injury), the standard amount of time required to return to form after an injury (= time injured, which would put that at summer 2002), and her unseeded status, a 3rd round would probably be adequate, although 4th would be better. (All pending draw. She could meet Venus in R1.)

For her to have a shot at 2002 year-end #1, a longshot for someone who doesn't figure to be back at 100% for a while, semis is adequate. (It would involve beating a couple of top players, and an accelerated return to form, to start with. If on form, she can go deep in the draw on any surface, and so wouldn't necessarily have to do better at this one tourney.)

Let's see for Martina, knowing she's been injured and isn't playing like herself, I'd be happy if she reached the semis or final.

For Justine I'm hoping she can reach the quarters or even better.

Cara, Daja and Maja reaching the 3rd round.

Su-Wei and Angie to reach the maindraw.

I'm hoping for a Hingis/Henin final though!

I think Anna should make 3rd/4th round, especially she wins Auckland. Anything less than that, isn't really good enough.

Martina, to have any credibility/confidence at all, needs to reach the semis/finals at the least. More importantly perhaps she needs a big win over someone like Lindsay/Venus/Serena/Jen to remind her than she can beat the big babes.

I would like to see Monica defend her points and reach the quarter finals at least.

I would be thrilled if she ended her recent grand slam semi final drought.

I woulnd't look any further than that.

As for Iva, I hope that she can make it to the 4th round, or even the quarters. That way, she may gain confidence, and hopefully do well for the rest of the season.

I hope Mary reaches the quarters at least, she needs to get back into form!
