I would really like to know this. While Pam Shriver and Mary Jo Fernandez were relegated to bench duty today, ESPN/ESPN2's French Open host Chris Fowler called the Serena Williams - Amelie Mauresmo match with Mary Carillo. I don't get it. He's not a tennis guy. He's a college football and college basketball guy.

I like Chris Fowler and think he is a fine college football and college basketball host for ESPN. And he does a good job as host of the French Open. But now I've noticed him calling big matches. Why is that? I don't recall Fowler calling matches at the 2003 Australian open. He was the host. And he did a good job. But now he's getting airtime in calling matches ahead of seasoned tennis analysts and experts. And that puzzles me. Any insight into this would be appreciated.

I think this all has to do with ratings. He is a familar voice for the largest demographic of ESPN viewers (the same ones that watch College Football Game Day). He's not terrible, but Drysdale is a little better.

Chris isn't bad or good - he will get better as he learns more about the game.

I am actually excited by his increased involvement as I think he has developed a real appreciation for tennis, and for the players as great atheletes. Hopefully he will carry this back to ESPN and his other announcing jobs :)

The same way Marv Albert got to call tennis for TNT, apparently :D At least Fowler isn't an ingrate like Albert was.

Cliff Drysdale is a former player, just FYI ;) I like him. He's so droll.

Chris SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! the only reason why he sucks, is because he doesnt know enough about tennis to comentate it. he should study it, pass a test, then become a proper commentator

TH, I know Cliff Drysdlae is a former tennis player. I've enjoyed his tennis broadcasting for more than 15 years.

And why is Marv Albert an ingrate?

He is a good commentator.
He is developing quickly the knowledge about the game that a tennis commentator requires. He gets suprised sometimes by Serena's winners, at how hard she hits them, and he alway says "wow"... I am sure he has more fun commentating tennis than football and basketball, because he gets to go to Australia, France, etc...

I love Chris and he did commentate on matches at the AO. I'll have to find some tapes but I remember him in the booth with Pam and Mary Jo at least two times. I think it was for the doubles final. :)

I just like Chris' voice... Cliff's voice is ok but everyone else's voice bothers me.. it's like I've developed an allergic reaction to Pam and Mal's voice. It's kinda the same way they had Mal doing courtside b.s. and now he's commentating on matches a lot, even women's matches when he was just with Pat before. He's about as interesting as spackling drywall. *yawn*

Yeah Chris did do a few matches at the AO. Remember he was the guy who did that annoying whistle when Serena would shove a weak second serve down someone's throat. He's getting better and I like him. I think he brings enthusiasm to the booth. Once he learns more about the game I think he'll be among the better ones. Then again, we could all be here next year bitching about him too. Time will tell.

I always felt that having someone in the box that doesn't know the sport too well benefits viewers who also do not know much about tennis. If I was a casual fan of a sport, it would be easier to have one commentator answer simple questions that perhaps I might even have about the sport. After all, if they want new tennis viewers, they need to introduce them in a way that makes the viewer not feel so stupid, but answers some of those basic questions. Plus, if you are a casual viewer, you might feel good knowing more than the commentators.
