No less an authority than TBE, said that the WTA "forced" Jennifer to enter the tournament. How did they do this, and did they (or the tournament) have to pay her a guaranteed appearance fee? Just wondering about how this kind of situation works. She obviously had no prior intention or desire of playing here.

Hard Designation, thats how
Jen didnt apply for a WC, but the WTA were forced to dig deep to get a top player after Venus, Lindsay withdrew

so it was Jen who was the Top GOLD EXEMPT player on list

Kim, Justine aren't Top of that list so don't count.

She's just taking one for the team.. IMO she should be playing this one anyway so I hope she takes it seriously, a title is a title. I guess we'll see how she reacts.

b. Hard Designations
Each Top 10 Gold Exempt player is subject to one (1) Hard Designation by the Tour. Refusal to accept a Hard Designation will warrant an automatic $25,000 fine.

Further explanation please...

What is the Gold Exempt list and how players are ranked? Why was Jennifer chosen?

They actually have a rule that forces players to play? Oh well, what's another injury to the WTA Tour, right? It's like a war draft. When your number gets drawn, you have to sign up immediately. Should you refuse, failure to comply results in getting shot, erm, fined.

Was this what happened to Kim in Toronto or did she always intend on playing that tournament voluntarily?

I agree with Mase, she should have been playing Moscow anyway, so it doesn't bother me. That's the rules with the Gold Exempt. Furthermore, I haven't seen Jen tank a match since her "dark days" and I don't expect to see it any time soon. If she is physically able (shoulder), she will play.

when did the wta let her know about this decision?

If she wasn´t in Europe ..she must be really upset.

Plus if she REALLY didnt want to play then she would have taken the fine, 25,000.00 isnt that much to her..........

Jen won't tank, she is a competitor. Hopefully this will get her into the swing of the indoor season , win or lose and she can build up momentum as the season draws to a close.

If Jen didn't wana play, she'd leave it, but maybe she wants to test the shoulder out and see what damage she can do here.

Go Jen Jen! :)

$25,000 is really chump change to a top tennis player. Jennifer has been very much in control of her schedule this year- withdrawing from Tokyo, Charleston and Toronto. If she really doesn't want to play she won't.

The WTA can't really control the tennis players. This isn't figure skating.
