Henin-Hardenne Soars To New Heights

Soaring to new heights when she claimed her first Grand Slam crown at Roland Garros last month, Justine Henin-Hardenne still had her head in the clouds yesterday. The day after the third-ranked Belgian teamed with second-ranked Kim Clijsters to lead Belgium to a 5-0 sweep of defending Fed Cup champion Slovak Republic the pair were invited to participate in the parade honoring the Belgian national holiday.

The 5-foot-5 Henin-Hardenne leaped at the opportunity and soon found herself looking down on the parade as a passenger in the lead jet of the six jet fleet that spread three-colored smoke to symbolize the Belgian flag in the sky.

Clijsters could not attend as she was traveling to Stanford where she's playing in the Bank of the West Classic this week, but Henin-Hardenne's husband, Pierre-Yves, was a passenger in one of the jets for the one-hour flight and said the experience was unforgettable.

"We were well taken care of," Pierre-Yves told Henin-Hardenne's official web site. "The experience is not immediately describable with words.. it is too strong!"

Now safe on the ground, Henin-Hardenne is practicing for next week's Acura Classic in San Diego. She will join top-ranked Serena Williams and Clijsters in a formidable field that includes Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati, Chanda Rubin, Daniela Hantuchova, Magdalena Maleeva, Jelena Dokic, Conchita Martinez, Ai Sugiyama, Amanda Coetzer, Elena Dementieva, Vera Zvonareva, and Meghann Shaugnessy.
