Henin-Hardenne Celebrates Happy Birthday With Win

Justine Henin-Hardenne celebrated her 21st birthday day by unwrapping a fourth-round win to present herself with a place in the Roland Garros quarterfinals. Despite dropping a set for the first time in the tournament, the fourth-seeded Belgian overcame Patty Schnyder, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to reach the final eight for the second time in four French Open appearances.

Two years ago, Henin-Hardenne held a 6-2, 4-2 lead over compatriot Kim Clijsters and was on the verge of reaching the Roland Garros final before blowing the lead and bowing out in three sets.

This year, she’s performed like a player intent on returning to the final four. In the quarterfinals, Henin-Hardenne will play eighth-seeded American Chanda Rubin, who beat Henin-Hardenne in their last meeting. The winner of that match would likely play defending champion Serena Williams, should Williams beat either fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo in her quarterfinal.

The top-seeded Williams defeated Japan’s Ai Sugiyama, 7-5, 6-3 today.
