Am flying to Perth on 25 January. How long will it take me to acclimatise? Have just read with horror that Welsh rugby team took days to get used to it and were awake all night and asleep all day!!! Is this true, or are they just lazy b*****ds?

I need to know because Ive got semis tickets for the Aussie Open on 29 and 30 January and now have horrific mental pictures of me sleeping through the whole thing!!

Thanks

I never flew to Australia, but I have some experiences in flying far. My experience is that you need about a day for every hour of time difference. It's not that you are sleeping all day otherwise, but you get tired suddenly, even in the middle of the day. If you take a day for each hour of difference, you'll be feeling fit in time for the Aussie Oen :)

um...let me think :p ...it took me like a whole week to acclimatise when i went to America...the time zones were like totally different...if it was a.m. there, it would be p.m. in hk...so I guess it won't take you too long to acclimatise if you go to Aus... but what I normally do is, I try to adjust the time I'm about to change into (start when you're on the plane)... like... stay as much awake as you possibly can in the day time... it's very hard but it kinda works...
afterall, it worked for me... ;) lucky I'm in hk so when I go to the Aussie opens it's only 2 hours differ from here!! :D
hope it helps... :wavey:

I once flew to Australia, starting in Belgium, over to Holland, plane to London, other plane to Bangkok, change plane to Sydney, trip to Youth Hostel, duration 30 hours. Exhausting ! We left 6.30 in the morning and arrived around 10 PM, went straight to bed , and hoped we would conquer jetlag without any problem that way .

We were wrong! :banghead:

It took us about a week to get fully adapted, but after about 4 days things already got better. We did lay awake for hours during the night, and couldn't get awake in the morning . And my stomach was completely upset! I couldn't stand any food before +/- 11 AM. But if it's any comfort to you: I never fell asleep during the day, things didn't get that bad :).

I don't know if you ever flew that long before, but if you haven't, 2 things I found out on my way (that is, if you're a girl, which for some reason I think you are :) ):
1. Carry your hairbrush in your hand luggage. I didn't, and my hair felt (and looked  ) awful
2. Don't wear a bra. It just starts irritating and hurting...;)

My advice is when youget on the plane, change your watch to the time in Australia. This way you can try and regulate your sleep while in the air to Aussie times. When you get to Aus. make sure that you stay awake during the day - Even if youare really tired, go for a walk or something to keep you occupied. Then at night, order a wake up call for the morning, approx. 7:30am is a good time. This helps you get into sink.
It works for me when I travel abroad to play tennis.

It's really tough, I can tell you.
I arrived in the morning and I just HAD to go to bed, too exhausted. It was NOT POSSIBLE to stay awake. Result: you then wake up at night of course.
Took me 2-3 days to become normal. My Australian friends told me that there is no use fighting it, the trip is just too long (one full day).
My idea would be to try to arrive in the evening, if there are flights that allow that.
Another thing you can do is to make a stop in Singapore or Malaysia for some days.
