Davenport advances over Graf

Lindsay Davenport used impressive defense, aggresion, and passing shots to overcome Steffi Graf in the first round of the tournament 6-4,6-4. She was excited to win and move on she next faces Meghann Shaughnessy who took out #2 Anastasia Myskina with the same scoreline @$ Davenport's match. Good Luck Lindsay

Venus Double Bagels Harkleroad

Williams Remains undefeated on grass this season

Venus Williams returns a shot to Ashley Harkleroad. Williams beat Harkleroad 6-0 6-0

Venus Williams continued her successful grass season, with a punishing 6-0 6-0 victory over fellow American Ashely Harkleroad.

"It was closer then it looked. Many games went to deuce. I feel sort of bad, because Ashley is a great player. No one should be double bagelled. Hopefully she rebounds for Wimbledon," Venus said.

Venus, who won Dubai last week, remains undefeated on grass this season.

"I'm just trying to play well. I really want to do well at Wimbledon. That's my goal. A nice showing there. This week is sort of a moot point. I just want points, but next week is my goal."

Sharapova def. Molik 6-3 6-3

"This tournament is a perfect oppurtunity for me to get my ranking up to where I should be. Unfortunately last week I was ill and did compete in my match against Venus, but when my time comes again I know I will beat her."

"Today against Alicia I just played so well, she came out on fire but after tthe first 3 games I got going and attacked her serve and ground strokes. Shes such a fluky player, it is amazing that shes still on this tour."

"My serve done me well today, I had 7 aces in total, so im very happy with that and my backhand helped me towards the end. I think I hit like 13BH winners which is really good for me and my coach."

Game, Set, and Match: Daja Bedanova

Daja Bedanova (CZE) def. Maria Sharapova (RUS) 7-5; 7-5

Neither player did any sort of scouting, or came up with a specific strategy to play this match. Maria just kept hitting away, and Daja kept on mixing her strategy. It was the Chech's consistency and ability to frustrate Maria and capitalize on her many UFEs that won her the match. She still isn't aggressive enough in her power games, and probably wouldn't bother power playres that are comfortable on grass, but Sharapova was inconsistent enough to give Daja the chance that she needed to win.

3-5 Zvonareva

Game, Set, and Match: Vera Zvonareva

Vera Zvonareva (RUS) def. Venus Williams (USA) 6-4; 6-3

Venus kept at her one-dimensional power game, and Vera knew that if she mixed it up and stayed with Venus for the first couple of games, the American would eventually self destruct with errors and Vera would clinch the victory. This happened perfectly for the Russian. Her slices and moonballs confused Venus, and made the American hit a few extra tough shots in each rally. The errors eventually paid off, as Zvonareva has the shot of her life to win her first career title.

2-3 Smashnova
2-4 Smashnova
2-5 Smashnova
Game, Set, and Match: Anna Smashnova

Anna Smashnova (ISR) def. Natasha Zvereva (BLR) 7-5; 6-2

Natasha went for broke on her shots, but Anna anticipated this from her scouting reports. To counter this, she ran down alot of balls, and made sure Zvereva didn't see the same shot twice in a row. She'd slice the ball, carve out a dropshot, hit a moonball here, and a sharp angle there, then blast the ball to the corner out of the blue. Natasha couldn't keep up, and got so frustrated she began over-hitting, thus giving the Israeli the UFEs she wanted.

5-5

Game, Set, and Match: Meghan Shaughnessy

Meghan Shaughnessy (USA) def.Lindsay Davenport (USA) 7-5; 7-5

Lindsay had the right idea (she was aggressive and went all out on her strokes), but she just didn't have enough power games (only 5) to really win a match. Meghan gets every ball back, and gives you no freebies. You really have to hit winners against her, and go for broke.

Vera Plays her way into First Semifinal

Vera, Great win today
Thank you, I am very happy with the way I played today, especially since I played Venus Williams, who in my opinion is one of the best grass court players on the tour.

How does it feel to be in the first Fantasy Season semifinal of your career?
It's awesome, but I really want to take it a couple steps further, and my goal for this tournament is to win. But even if I don't, I'm happy with the way I've been playing going into Wimbledon. It's definitely a confidence booster to play well the week before a slam.

Thanks for your time Vera, and good luck tomorrow!
