What is the format of the competition? 4 girls on each team by the look of it. Do they each play all members of the opposite team?

I was going to say they make it up as they go along, but it seems not: http://www.mcbtennis.org/UserFiles/document/2014 MCCT Press Release announcing teams.pdf

The teams will play a total of 12 matches – eight singles
and four doubles – over
Thursday and Friday.

That Bermuda pic. A bit of googling shows it must be from 2000. Anne and Elena...

In the current format, each girl plays two singles and two doubles.

So the doubles should be straightforward, two teams from each country can play both teams from the other country

But since each girl only plays two singles matches, I wonder how they decide who plays who.

Looks like all our girls won their singles today, and we were already 4-2 up. So a successful campaign by the looks of it.

They nominate 1 to 4 and then 1&2 play 2&1, 3&4 play 4&3 and then reverse on second day. GB order appears to have been Taylor, swan, Christie, lumsden.

I wonder why the US put forward such a weak team this year. Looking at last year's edition there team was much stronger. http://www.lta.org.uk/NewWebsite/LTA/Documents/Fans News and Major Events/AEGON International/GBR vs USA MCCT LTABCT Scorecard.pdf

Very good wins over Townsend and Chirico for Katy and the other K - Katie also had a nice win over Chirico and pushed Townsend in two tight sets. Izzy narrowly lost to Jamie Loeb and Gabi had a tough tussle with Black losing in the third.

Has anyone seen Freya Christie play before? Judging by this picture she seems quite tall.

Bellis and Gordon were more concerned with the open section of the USO (Bellis, preparing, Gordon, pre-qualies). There was a G1 at College Park at the same time. American second or third string is usually at least competitive with GB.

Not seen Freya in the flesh; must have seen her playing doubles on the telly but evidently her playing style didn't make a big impression. (Don't trust the stats. I can't believe the winning team never either won or lost a point on their own merit once the rally had started. The stats only relate to the first two strokes of the rally in any case.)

Good result for Gemma. I expected more from Adeshina, Raducanu, and Fischer, but the latter two are only 11 years old, and Fischer did lose to the eventual runner up.

The Orange Bowl 12s and 14s get underway tomorrow. We've five players in the 12s main draw, with Indianna Spink seeded. Marni Banks and Holly Staff successfully navigated qualifying. Emma Raducanu faces a tough unseeded American, Whitney Osuigwe. Holly Fischer should be able to come through her first couple rounds before facing a tough seeded Russian.

We only have two girls in the 14s. Olivia Elliott also faces a tough unseeded American, Amanda Anisimova. Hannah Davies faces an opponent I'm not familiar with.

Emma and a relatively modest bowl of oranges to match her relatively modest accomplishment.

The turn of the year French 12U G3 starts tomorrow. The LTA have typically sent what they think are their best two players here. Well, obviously such a lowly tournament doesn't rate a place in Holly Fischer's agenda, but for those of us who don't know the 2014 British 11 and under scene but are interested to see who else might be nominated for the Winter Cup team(*), the names are Daisy Chapman (perhaps the most famous Cornish tennis player since Curtis?) and Maddie McLoughlin.

(*) Just me, then, as hingis_forever already knew and no one else cares

If I had to guess, I'd say our 12U Winter Cup team will be Holly Fischer, Kylie Bilchev, and perhaps Natalya Ogunwale, although 2004 player, Andrea Pineda, could be a good option.

Only just seen that the girl Emma lost to in the first round went on to win the whole tournament, so no shame in that. More importantly, that Emma went on a 10 match winning streak to take the consolation title which is no mean feat in itself so well done. ;) :yeah:

She seems to be one to keep an eye on in the future.
