Greece to make Hopman Cup debut
Friday, 2 November, 2001

PERTH, Nov 2 AAP - Greece will enter the Hopman Cup list for the first time this summer.

Greece's highest ranked male tennis player, 21-year-old Vasilis Mazarakis, and 84th ranked woman Eleni Danilidou, 19, will pair up for Greece's debut in the mixed-teams international tournament.

Their first challenge will be against Italians Davide Sanguinetti and Francesca Schaivone in a play-off match on December 29 for the eight place in the field.
Mazarakis has played in four Davis Cup ties, winning four of his seven matches. Danilidou reached the third round in the US open defeating Australia's Rachel McQuillan before losing to Monica Seles.

Hopman Cup defending champion Switzerland will open the main draw on December 30 in a clash against Australia at the Burswood Dome in Perth.

So it's newbies Greece in the ninth spot. Thanks TheBoiledEgg. I'm keen to watch Daniilidou play. I heard she looks and plays a bit like Philippoussis. I saw Mazarakis play back in March. He was pretty good. More interest in the women's match than the men's (for me anyway). Should be a competitive mixed dubs if it comes down to the wire.
YESSSSSSSS!!!

Go Eleni! Go Vasilis! Go Greece!
thats a joke!

sorry, but i can´t understand this!
Why is this a joke, matthias? Don't you want to see Eleni do well?

Great! Terry must happy when he read this one! I seen her once but not whole match Hopefully, Greece win Qualification means I can see her on TV! But I really want Italy win as well So, GO GREECE AND ITALY! LOL!
FRANZI: do you know the ranking from the male player ? thats the reason why i think it is a joke!

i think both players should be top100!
GO ITALY

They should win it easy. I still do not know why it wasn't given to an Asian team. Maybe Tammy didn't want to play, and Ai had points to defend. Oh well Go ITALIA, AND AUSTRALIA
Eleni is in Top 100. I have no idea about the Greek man ranks now. I have to check ATP site now I'll let you know soon if I can.
Err... he's LOWEST RANKS! Definity, Italy will win the Qualifcation!

I think they just wanted to give some new teams a go. I understand that. But I thought that since the event was ITF sanctioned, that they were going to try and field the best players from each country. In fact, Greece is only one of few teams to have fielded their best players. The others were Australia and Belgium.

The US are without Capriati and Agassi (I wonder if he has ever been asked. What a huge drawcard that team would have been. And what a thrill it would be for Perth fans to see Agassi play mixed.) Capriati was asked once to play with John McEnroe, but then Mac pulled out injured and Capriati decided to delay her comeback. They were replaced by Ivan Lendl and Mary Joe Fernandez that year. Seles is a good sub, and I guess out of loyalty, so is Gambill. I thought Andy Roddick and Capriati would've been awesome together. Perhaps next time.

Spain has Arantxa, but is without either Juan Carlos Ferrero (who is probably playing in Qatar) or Alex Corretja (same reason). Tommy Robredo is a good sub though. He's new and potentially one of the next best Spanish players. Carlos Moya probably won't return since he always seems to get sick when he comes to Perth.

France are without Grosjean and Mauresmo. Clement is a good sub for Sebastien, but I would have thought Sandrine might've accepted an invite since she only has 1 point to defend that week in Auckland. Razzano might be a good player, but she is much further down the list.

Argentina have Paola Suarez, but is without Guillermo Canas. But I think Coria is a good sub. He's awesome. I've never seen Canas play. I've seen Coria play on TV at Wimbledon and at Monte Carlo. He looks a bit like a cross between Moya and Malisse.

The defending champs, Switzerland, has Federer back on side but are without Hingis. I assume she pulled out shortly after getting injured. Otherwise, I'm sure she would've liked to return. Vavrinec was probably the only available Swiss player. I assume Schnyder and Gagliardi had already made other commitments by then, so Vavrinec was next on the list. But she's officially the lowest ranked female player in the event this year.

Italy haven't played since being the invited but non-playing alternates at the start of the 1996 event. That time, Silvia Farina and Diego Nargiso were in Perth to practice and sub for any ailing teams. They never got a chance to play. The last time the Italians played was Hopman Cup III - ages ago. Schiavone is a good sub for Grande (who I think has points to defend in Auckland) and Farina-Elia (who is retiring). Sanguinetti is the highest ranked Italian male.

I'm bummed that there was no Russian team this year. Imagine a Kaflenikov and Dementieva team. Or even a Safin and Kournikova team. Or whichever combination of those four players. Tickets would've been sold out in less than 2 seconds flat.

Well, those are just some of my thoughts.

Hello Elisse! Here's another 'Goooooo Greece!'.

That's for you, Majoli man, if you're reading.
This SHOULD BE an easy match for Italy, Francesca in her good days is far stronger than Eleni, and the same for Davide (who is this greek guy ?). FORZA ITALIA !!! it's a pity that Silvia and Rita are not playing, they have many points to defend during the same week
If Greece play then Great Britain should be able to play Elena Baltacha or Anne Keothavong with Tim Henman would be great!
Gooooooooo Greece!
I think if Eleni is ON , she has a fair chance to win that match.....Franny is tough but Lena can overpower her IMO , as long as she gets to the net and serves well!

The guys singles......dont go ther e, but as long as he has a power packed serve Greece will stand a chance to qualify.....

goooooooo greece! maybe theyll be next years fairytale run a la Thiland 2000.
