Theme = story that was discussed from onset of a Slam all the way through until the last ball is played on either men's or women's side.

Obviously the 2003 "Theme" is that nary a Williams is in the draw. I was trying to remember 'themes' of Slams gone past.

1995 US Open was obviously the return of Monica Seles. That story clearly dominated anything else tennis.

1998 US Open was clearly about Graf and her attempt for the "Golden Grand Slam".

I honestly can't think of any (more than just this year or last) of any others. I'm sure at the time, they were spouted about a lot but none have stuck in my longterm memory.

Monica's absence in Slams after stubbing...but the theme was somewhat just "forgotten" at times...

I agree - but I'm glad they didn't drone on and on about it every match for every Slam. She was missed, and everyone knew it.
