Notes: 'Hungerford' was an anonymous name. Ladies of this era often avoided publicity by giving aliases and not revealing birthdays or first names. Sporting ladies were still pioneers in the Victorian age, when some beleieved in the motto that a woman's name should appear in the newspaper only 3 times in her life:When she was born, when she was married, and when she died.

A record draw for the singles. The women have turned a corner this year. From now on Wimbledon draws will gradually increase except for 1900.

Martin was Irish. should we list her as such? I'll find out some of these first names.

The name Kirby looks familiar. Perhaps an early South African champ? I'll check.

Notes: Sadie Berryman later married South Australia player Max Newcombe.

Westacott was considered the most dynamic and exciting Australian woman player of the 1930's. Crowds were thrilled and delighted "with her determination to hit the cover off of the ball, to aim for the lines, to play tennis like a man in an era when women players outside the United States tended to take their 'femininity' on court with them." The 1930 Girls final was played at the same time as the men's final. Crowds flocked to see "Em", leaving Gar Moon and Harry Hopman to finish their match in front of an almost empty stand.

Dorothy Bundy admired Westacott's play, and said she'd be a sensation in America. The phrase used to describe Westacott's play was "She smote and spared not." Westacott's best shot was her inside-out forehand, with a Western grip, "which she hit harder and more accurately than anyone in Australian tennis, male or female". She had a superb kick serve, and a good bakchand drive. Her overhead was "devastating", and reputed to be "as severe as Gerald Patterson's".

However, she was inconsistent. And, unfortunately, she never had the opportunity to play overseas.

First Round
May Hardcastle(4) d. Audrey Lewin 6-2, 18-16

Quarters
Nancye Wynne d. Gwen O'Halloran 6-0, 6-3
Joan Hartigan(5) d. Hardcastle(4) 6-2, 6-3
Thelma Coyne d. Connie Coate 6-1, 6-3
Nell Hopman d. Alison Hattersley 6-3, 6-4

Semis
Wynne d. Hartigan(5) 6-0, 3-6, 6-1
Coyne d. Hopman 6-4, 2-6, 6-3

Final
Wynne d. Coyne 5-7, 6-4, 6-0
----------------------------------
Notes: All 8 seeds reached quarters. Supposedly, there were "no surprises" other than Hartigan defeating Hardcastle. Therefore, we must infer that the top 3 seeds were Wynne, Coyne and Hopman in some order. My guess: Wynne was #1, Hopman #2, and Coyne #3?

Wynne got in trouble for hitting a ball into the gallery, which happened to land near the Governor of New South Wales. The President of the LTAA rebuked her, and said that if the team about to tour New Zealand had been an official one, she'd have been debarred.

Notes: There was seeding. It was the 1921 Lenglen disaster that introduced the concept.
Ryan-Mallory at 1-2(or reverse), with Browne, Goss at 3-4. Anderson and Bayard were tough. I'll try to find out seeds.
No opponents are given for 2 of the 2nd round women's doubles. We know their opponents from
missing spots. perhaps the NTY can fill in there.
----------------------------------------------

Some of these women were around a long time. Eleanor Sears was around in the "aughts" and Barger-Wallach was the 1908 champ! Wightman was the 1909-12,19 winner.Browne 1912-14.

A poor entry. Helen Wills was still recovering form her appendicitis operation of June. The British were absent as the Wightman Cup was played in Britain. There were no foreigners entered. Ironically,Molla was considered more American than Ryan, due to Ryan's living abroad. Fans cheered the Norsewoman mightily as she batterd her way to one last Us title-a record 8th.
