Women and weight is a very touchy subject for many people. But athletes and weight is a perfectly legitemate topic of conversation. Weight affects performance. Please leave the thread now if hearing discussions of women's weight upsets you.[/i'

What players seem to have GAINED wiehght inthe off-season?

I ask this because I saw pics of jenn and she looked visibly heavier.

Lindsay's knee. Martina's ankle. Have they been able to run? Venus and Serena Williams were wearing awfully loose track suits when carrying the Olympic torch. Monica may be fitter than she's been in five years. Does that get her down to single digit body fat count?

What player's performance would you say is most effected by her weight?

Monica won't be single digit body fat. That's very rare for women, Amanda Coetzer might have it, but certainly nobody in the current top 10. It would be something though if Monica went into the season as one of the fittest players. I suspect you are right about Jen's worsening fitness. I wouldn't be surprised to see her settle into the #8-#10 spot by the end of the year, if she doesn't shape back up.

Even tho she aint top 10 (well #12!) Meghann would hardly have any fat on her at all, she's practically see through! Eat girl!

I havent seen pics Of Jenn lately, but everyone seems to say she's stacked the weight on...and with Christmas turkey just round the corner ...anyway, Jenn is a fit young woman, she'll be right IMO.

I too was gonna ask about the fitness about Hingis and Lindsay...does anyone know how their rehab/fitness training etc is going?

NOBODY in the current top 10. Not Venus, and not Justine Henin. For a woman to be under 10% bodyfat, you would see every strand of muscle on her body, like you sometimes do with Amanda.

Well, a lot of the girls prefer to take a break. Jelena and Monica have been doing heavy fitness training together. Jelena's been receiving some instructions from Monica's coach and Radko Armenulic was in Florida with Jelena helping her there.

Jelena said she's been doing some VERY intense work with Monica and they're both determined to become EXTREMELY fit. She said it's the best she's seen Monica ever.

So we know they'll be fit after the break. They're both hardworkers.

the average woman has something like 23% for body fat. when you get below, it can be healthy, but as you dip lower and lower for woman (the average woman) its nto good for you. so i certainly hope that monica never gets single digit body fat, shed never be able to have children im sure or anything!!!

Muscle and bodyfat aren't incompatible - you can have substantial muscle mass and still be cuddly .

Single digit? Henin and Meghann might come the closest, but for a woman to be have less that 10% body fat you're probably looking at someone who's either living through a famine or running marathons.

But we shouldn't get hung up on bodyfat as a measure of fitness. Obviously it's a factor, but so are muscle strength, aerobic fitness...Frankly, if you're having trouble with your knees, (or a weak heart for that matter) they may not care whether that extra 10 pounds is muscle or extra helpings of pancakes, it's still added stress.

Lindsay has a history with her weight, but upon returning from injury, she's usually lost a little weight rather than gained. She looked very fit returning from injury around Wimbledon. She has a weight-conscious coach in Van't Hoff (v. skinny dude) on her side.

Martina, on the other hand, usually seems to gain weight upon returning from injury. When she broke her leg in 97, she piled it on. She loves her sandwiches and her pastas, so I've read. I hope she's working towards fitness like last year. I'm surprised that her mother doesn't advise her with regards to nutrition.

IMHO.... Martine should put on just a tinnie bit of weight... it may make her slower by a little, but it'll let her hit more powerful/deeper ground strokes. A little sacrifice off the speed for that is probably worth it. Martina is a fast girl anyway.
