So says tennis columnist Charles Bricker of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in his weekly column today. Discuss:

Rowdy fans

There's an unwritten rule for fans at tennis matches. You applaud the good shots, but not the mistakes. That's what irritated Serena most in the latter stages of the third set against Henin-Hardenne.

Led by hundreds of Belgian fans in the upper deck who were angry because Williams correctly asked for and received overrules on a couple of balls, they applauded when she missed a first serve or committed an unforced error. This is what brought her to tears later.

But if tennis is ever going to get kicked into the 21st century, it's time for players and chair umpires to stop worrying about the noise the fans are making and just play the game.

It's commonplace for fans behind the basket to try to distract free throw shooters. It's normal for fans to applaud derisively when a soccer player shanks a penalty kick wide. Fans are encouraged to make as much noise as possible to disrupt a visiting team's offense.

There's no logical reason why this behavior shouldn't be applied to tennis as well. This is no longer a country club sport. These men and women are making millions of dollars. Deal with it.

And if you didn't like the support Henin-Hardenne got in Paris, give it back to her at the U.S. Open.

Judging the sound of the ball coming off the opponents racquet is part of the game. If the crowds get too loud, the time it takes to quiet them down before the next point could increase, slowing down the matches. Would that be a little logic Bricker could comprehend?

Bricker wants Justine to pay, and is egging on the US crowds. What a fine tennis columnist.
