Anyone who grew up watching BBC Wimbledon coverage will have been familiar with the voice of Gerry Williams, who passed away yesterday. Along with the legendary Dan Maskell and Bill Threlfall, Gerry Williams was one of the senior trio of male commentators back in the late 70s & 80s and continued on through the eras of Des Lynam & Sue Barker.

Whereas Dan Maskell brought the gravitas with his upper class accent and inside-out understanding from a lifetime as player and coach, I always found Gerald Williams to be a forgiving sort of commentator with an infectious enjoyment of, and fascination with, the game.

He was married to British tennis player, Joyce Barclay (Mrs G.M. Williams on the drawsheets), though I believe they divorced.

That's sad to hear - always enjoyed him doing the daily review shows with Des Lynam.
