With all this talk about who is and is not a member of Gen Suck, I thought it's time to really formally outline what we mean when we use the term. When we talk about Generation Suck, I think that we mean the players who were expected to be the new stars following the WTA's "greatest" generation (i.e. the Williams sisters, Hingis, Henin, Clijsters, Davenport, Capriati, Seles, Pierce, Dementieva, Mauresmo et al), but who turned out to be either lackluster highly ranked players (Safina, Jankovic, Wozniacki, Radwanska), spectacular train wrecks (Vaidosova), injury flame-outs (Golovin, Szavay) or just plain over-hyped flops (Peer, Paszek, Krajicek, Chakvetadze & many, many others)

Although people started complaining loudly about the crap performance of the young generation in around 2007, I would place the roots of Gen Suck quite a bit earlier, in 2003. For me, the original member of Generation Suck has to be Hantuchova (b. 1983), who crashed and burned in the summer of that year after being the most hyped WTA player since Kournikova. Hantuchova set the tone for what was to follow over most of the next 8 years among the so called up and comers.

I choose a broad definition of Gen Suck as comprising all players born between 1983-1990, though not including Clijsters and Dokic, who clearly belonged to the previous generation. The one obvious exception to the Gen Suck template is Sharapova (b. either 1986 or 1987 depending on who you believe), but even she has failed to deliver much since AO '08. Despite her RG '08 title, Ivanovic's disastrous record since then makes her an obvious Gen Suck member. The only other possible exceptions are Stosur (b. 1984 but too much of a late bloomer to have ever been considered a hyped player), Kvitova (too early to say if last year was a fluke), Azarenka (she won a GS and we cant assume her downfall yet), and Kuznetsova (a classic under-achiever, but 2 GS titles and 2 RU is still a decent record).

Ideally I would like to present the entire list of Gen Suck disappointments, so help me out, and I'll add to this OP as I have time.

I think in the end, if you use Hantuchova (b. 1983) as the start, either Azarenka or Kvitova (b. 1989, 1990) will be the end of it. Maybe even Radwanska, if she racks up slams. I think players born in 85,86 would be better though.

I also disagree about your definition, and I think even Maria is part of it. It's the product of being the successor to arguably the greatest generation of women's tennis.

Generation suck is used to refer to Wozniacki, Azarenka, Radwanska etc

These players came up early to fill the vacuum that was left by the failures of the real generation suck that the OP refers to who (and the early exit of Justine and Kim!). I would say the prime cuplrits are Ivanovic post RG08, Vaidisova, Chakvetadze, Szavay (injuries)/not her fault, Sharapova being MOA (for all intents and purposes) during her shoulder problems and recovery/not her fault

I think Azarenka and co are coming into their own and will hopefully lose the moniker of generation suck.

Or maybe it can just apply to Pushniacki ;-)

Generation Suck are players from 89-91 only. You dont have to include everybody who had a fail career. And you dont need to take "suck" literally.

I dont know how long you have been following WTA, but there is no doubt that Gen Suck started way before the 1989 players. These latest players are only the tail end and, imo, not the biggest disappointments. The word "generation" implies an extended, decade-long trend.

"Generation Suck" is just a term. Not an actual generation. Just like Generation Slut. And Generation Whack. Or whatever.

but the original purpose of this fine piece of TF lingo was to mock the new, upcoming generation, around 2006-08 when these players first appeared on tour.

Fine, everybody can use this term the way s/he wants, but it will make some kind of confusion here. (even if many new member not familiar with the real origin of this name.)

I guess that the term was first coined on wtaworld in 2008, but by definition, young players had to be sucking for while before that.

This just in: Radwanska once again cements her status as a Generation Suck icon, getting thrashed by Kuznetsova in RG 3R.

Generation Suck is labeled this because they actually suck, boring and having less consistent and interesting games than the "Greatest Generation" as you say. The other players you mention (JJ, Ana, Safina, Kuznetsova, etc.) are known as the "Lost Generation" because they were seen to have the game to contend with the best, but flopped under the pressure.

Agreed.

Generations break down as follows:

- Great Generation - we all know who
- Middling Generation - Ivanovic, Safina, Jankovic, (Kuznetsova, Zvonareva - both uniquely somewhere in between Great Generation and Middling)
- Gen Suck - Wozniacki, Radwanska, Kvitova, Azarenka, and all their more incompetent colleagues

Good post. I agree that there is potential for them to lose the awful moniker of Gen Suck. There are moments of hope, almost entirely coming from Kvitova and Azarenka. However, when compared to champions prior, they appear very limited. If you think of Kvitova as this generation's Davenport, she's no Davenport. But - she is still young and Davenport peaked from about 22 or 23 - 28 y.o. We will see.

What happens after Gen Suck? Gen Sucks More? Hopefully some fun, talented girls like Garcia and Townsend can rid us of the awful Putintsevas and Gavrilovas, etc. Very unclear how things will shake out in about 3-5 yrs time.

Unless you put Sveta & Maria in the same generation, its meaningless how you break it up.
They not only brokethru 2 months apart, Sveta is older and beat Maria in Wimbledon 2003.
If you put Maria in with players who won majors in the 1990's, Sveta has to be in that group too.

Neither Sveta nor Masha can be included in the previous generation, as that "golden" era had ended by 2004. So they are just anomalies as the only Gen Suck era players with GS-winning resumes.

Ivanovic & Stosur are in that group & won majors.
Fran & Li are late developers fron Henin generation of FO winners.
Still could be some late bloomers coming from Sveta's generation. Obviously, Gen Caro have years ahead.

(forget to reply this.)
Szavay was peak Generation Suck, while those others come earlier.
2005 Year End Junor ranking would give a clearer picture
2nd half of 2007 when they started to get more name on the pro tour.
