Re: Anne Keothavong names Fed Cup team

The team picks itself. Konta, Watson, Rae. Oh wait, what was that third name? Blooming heck. I was expecting a more ordinary name than Robson.

Interesting picks.

I do get why Anne picked Laura. She can get the big wins. However, I also understand why people think Tara should have been picked, and Tara does fight really hard in Fed Cup matches.

I wonder what she is thinking though..will it be Hev and Joss for doubles and Jo/Laura for singles, or is she going to place Laura in doubles with Joss??

Okay wasn't expecting that. Not a big surprise but I thought Laura might be wanting to concentrate on ranking.

She is a good asset to the team. She's a big match player but I question how Anne will use her if Hev and Jo go playing the singles as I believe Heather is our best doubles player. I'm quite indifferent to Rae being on the team. Why not Smith too? They play together every week so to split the partnership up for Fed Cup seems odd. I would rather Anne just not choose them at all and give Tara a chance or some of our top juniors.

I mean this wouldn't matter at all if Naomi made herself available  Losing a top 100 singles player and our number 1 doubles player because of conflicting reasons is really frustrating.

If I had those four players, I'm afraid I'd pick Jo and Hev for singles and Hev and Joss for doubles. Of course, it may all look very different in a week's time. (Maybe Anne gave Tara a phone call saying she had to pick Laura so as not to knock her confidence but reminding her that if circumstances change, the team can yet be altered.)

Interesting point. Jo and Hev are definitely playing the singles. But who is the first player to win a WTA MD doubles match this year? Laura can get results but its hard to look past our 'doubles specialist' Joss and our wimbledon mixed champ Hev. But then Laura and Hev know each other well and have played together in the past including Fed Cup.....

I don't know. I would rather Anne build up the new talent with the team. I think Katie, Jodie and Emily have a lot to offer.

We have to remember that there is also a mysterious 'fifth' place up for grabs.

Yes, I agree with that. I personally would have picked Jo, Hev, and Raith, bring Tara and Swan as back ups. But, I am not exactly displeased to see Laura on the team, as it could actually end up being a big boost for her.

Is such a shame, Naomi would be a huge asset for the team.

It's a conundrum as to who to pick at the moment. I think there are so many combinations in terms of who could play singles or doubles. Konta is a given in singles but the rest is totally changeable.

Yeah Laura brings it for big matches usually but after today's AO match does it look like a great pick? She has match-winning experience I suppose (at some time in the distant past). Tara has done well recently but only in $25k level. When Laura's game is on she is a world-beater. It's a gamble if she shows up. The bonus is she could pair up in doubles. Potentially she could swap in for Hev in singles depending on the draw, while Hev would be great in doubles.

Don't think Katie Swan's form at the moment would justify her inclusion.

For a fifth player: Freya Christie, big weapons and experience pairing with Laura in doubles. Or Emily Appleton - in very good form on the junior circuit right now and deserves a chance to get this experience on senior Fed Cup team, like Katie has done before her.

I think Katie is another one who struggles to get motivated for low events. She played really well last year in Fed Cup and really helped the team to get past their group. But I was referring more to the juniors getting more of a chance- bring all 3 of them I say and let them experience the Euro Africa group 1 circus for all that it is :grin2:

Re: Anne Keothavong names Fed Cup team

What a difficult decision for Keothavong, many players could stake their claim as the second singles player after Jo. The good news is that hopefully Jo will be playing. Last year, as Jo was injured GB had little of a chance IMO. This year, with Joko in hand, GB are favourites to progress through, unless some other country with a top player is lurking.

Definitely put Watson in for singles first to test her form. If she plays well it's a given. Robson, as much as I am a big fan of hers, is not in good form, didn't bounce back from the Auckland loss and played terribly yesterday against Hesse. Swan is a basic mess at the moment and Tara isn't showing the form she showed at Wimbledon and also some of the US hard courts afterwards.

Jo/Watson in singles, Rae with Robson in doubles and if Robbo plays poorly, sub her out with Freya Christie who has really impressed me lately. Gabriella taylor is another one that in a few years could really make an impact.

Yes Gabi could become a very useful addition. She made three $10k finals in a row at the end of last season. In fact she had an excellent 2016 in general aside from her sudden illness at Wimbledon. She hasn't played yet in 2017 so I'm not sure where she is right now, form-wise. In terms of their current Fed Cup zone I could see Gabi winning a few matches.

Yup. Obviously not a current choice but by next year even, you never know. I've seen small clips of her game and it looks good. Yeah, aside from that crazy illness she was playing really well, and actually had a very good showing at Wimbledon in juniors and seniors before the illness hit, sadly.

The groups-http://www.fedcup.com/en/draws-results/group-i/europe-africa/2017.aspx

So we are in pool C

Not a totally bad group, Latvia, Turkey and Portugual all have one stand out player that could cause problem but none of the groups as a whole are as strong as ours.

However, if we get through pool C we have to beat the winner of pool B which has Croatia and Hungry...

But overall, I would say looking at the groups, we have one of the strongest.. But of course Hev, Laura and even Jocelyn's forms are a bit uncertain.. We're heavily relying on Joko to pull through for us here.

Agreed. As long as JoKo handles Ostapenko I think we'll be okay in the round robin stage. The second string matches have the potential to go either way depending on how Hev and Laura turn up.

Joss isn't even there yet. She's just won the doubles in Glasgow. What she's doing playing a $15k as a Top 100 player I don't know. So her form seems good, against $15k-level opposition.

Her and Anna did that last time before Fed Cup. I think she probably just wanted to get some match practice in.

P.S I know this is off topic, but did anyone see the last tie of the Davis cup yesterday of Edmund vs Shapovalov? What a shocking way for the tie to end. Hope the umpire's eye is ok...

Although to being it back on topic, did anyone hear the commentators mention that Naomi Broady is at Fed Cup? lol. Poor Joss.

I was going to delete the picture after I caught up and found Wintermute had posted it in Laura's and Heather's subforums. I'll just say sorry instead.

To answer your questions, yes and no. Perhaps I wasn't watching at the time.
