This was posted on the CNNsi message board. A review from a poster who attended the match. A must read.

Hi guys --

So I went to the exo at the Mohegan Sun last night. And it was both hilarious and fun to watch.

First, let me say I was in the second row and Monica looks terrific physically. Not a gram of cellulite, her arms are very toned, she's trim, tan, muscular, and just looks younger than ever. I was really impressed. That's the key thing about the night, I think for all us fans.

As for the match, what a nightmare - it was the most poorly organized exhibition in history. FIrst, they put on this charity doubles match with four New England newscasters, _none_ of know who how to play. THat's a full set of people who can't play tennis. THe crowd was booing and it was just the most boring, hideous thing to watch. I could have gone out there and done a better job. To make matters worse, the ballkids had clearly never watched a tennis match before. During the charity match, they had two seven year old boys as ballkids and two sixteen year old girls, caked in makeup who refused to run for balls and had their hands on their hips. I was thinking, "Boy, they better change these kids before the real match."

They didn't. And MOnica nearly killed a ball girl.

See, Monica came out and was a little antsy. Martina clearly told her to play her best but I think Mon wasn't sure what to do. So she let up at the beginnign and Martina started by breaking her. So Monica upped the tempo and started playing her normal game. Only the ballgirls kept dropping balls in the middle of the point, throwing balls and hitting MOnica when her back was turned, losing balls, refusing to run for them - Monica finally turned to one of the attitude girls and said, "Can you please just not do anything during the point? Please?" The girl just stood there, hands on hips.

Monica was just flustered by the whole scene. Martina took it more in stride, but that's cause she just really ate up the chance to play singles again. She played wonderfully, hitting some incredible volleys and really just showing us why she was so great.

Mon played at like 60% strength - once it got to the tiebreak, she turned it on and really made sure she won it handily.

The second set was weird cause the ballkids got even worse. Finally, really frustrated, Mon smashed an overhead so deep in the court that it hit the ballkid in the stomach. The crowd gave Mon a standing ovation.

She played awesome in the second set, because she clearly wanted to get out of there. She must have served like 20 aces in the match. Serve after serve.

She didn't move much, probably cause the surface was a bit weird and I don't think she was in the mood. She came out happy but the environment just drove her nuts.

The end was sweet though and she said she hoped to come back.

Ok, no worries, everything looked great - the score was irrelevant. It was more a practice session if anything, and Mon looks fantastic.

Thanks for the post Go Monica. I think everyone here was wondering about this exho. It's terrible for Monica and Martina that the event was so poorly organized and that the ball kids had such attitude. Thank God, WTA sanctioned events are much better @ taking care of their players!

I'm thrilled that Monica is in such great shape and is playing so well. I saw her match against Kournikova and she looks much thinner than she did at the US Open (The last time I saw her play). I hope Monica can stay healthy and do some damage next year.

I got an e-mail from a friend today who's sister was there, she saw things very different then the above report, but she was there to see Martina more then Monica. She felt that Both players were serious from the start, but Monica was a bit taken aback that Martina still can live on the net. Many passing shots that Monica tried to hit, were hit back past her before she could adjust. It was late in the first set before Monica started to read a few shots. Even after she upped the ante, she still struggled under the constant approaches from Martina. It is not surprising really, the last true Serve and Volleyer that Monica faced, was probably Martina, in the Charity event that she put together for Monica's return.

These 2 ladies are very good friends and it was Martina that laid all the ground work for Monica's return.

The incident about the Ballkid was also mentioned, but there was no standing ovation, but concern from Monica and Martina and ooh's and teeters of laughter from the crowd.
So I guess it was another one of those matches that only a neutral observer could give the full story on.

Very funny review, but I think Adrian's right and that it shouldn't be taken as gospel truth.

I don't like the implication that Monica deliberately allowed the match to get that close. She didn't seem to feel the need to allow Anna to win a few games, so why should she go easy on Martina?

Martina is very fit, still in practice because of her doubles, and her tactics are so different to most players at the moment that I don't find it hard to believe that she could have a close match against Seles.
