I'm putting this in this forum because I think I'll get better and quicker responses instead of quickly sinking into oblivion in GM. ;)

So is it true that the French only started to use red clay in 1912? :confused: I was under the impression that it has always been played on clay.

Also, since this is a historical thread, does anyone know when the first tournaments were played on red clay?

Sam- It's an important question for tennis historians, so I'll do some digging.

I can state with certainty that the Europeans were playing on clay (or, as the the French sometime scalled it, "en tout cas") by 1900. When Dorothea Lambert Chambers went to the Riviera in 1905 the matches were on clay.

Can anyone come up with exact dates?
