4. Vera Zvonarëva preview
-------------------------

Vera Zvonarëva is a cute and flairsomely talented player, whom I admire for her beautifully-produced groundstrokes of flairsome power, for the way she combines amazing lateral-retrieval abilities with powerful hitting, and most of all for her tremendous fighting spirit.

Last year was shaping up to be the best year of Vera's career, as she reached her first Major semi-final at the Australian Open 2009, and won her first Premier singles-title at Indian Wells.

But on 16th April 2009, Vera suffered a very nasty right-ankle injury whilst playing at Charleston. She missed the French Open 2009, struggled through the rest of the season in pain, and had surgery in November.

Vera has a decent 20:8 win/loss record for 2010 so far, but has dropped from #9 to #22 in the rankings after failing to defend her Australian Open 2009 semi-final and Indian Wells 2009 title. Her highlights of 2010 so far have been the successful defence of her Pattaya City title, and reaching the Charleston final, but seems to have lost her confidence after an embarrassingly one-sided loss in the latter.

Vera was still struggling with her ankle in early January, retiring from the first round of Sydney.

Vera eased into the fourth round of the Australian Open, beating #108 Kristína Kučová 6-2 6-0, #45 Iveta Benešová 6-0 6-3 and #36 Gisela Dulko 6-1 7-5, but ran out of gas as she lost 4-6 6-4 6-0 to #7 Victoria Azarenka after leading 6-4 *4-2.

Vera was apparently back to full fitness in February, as she successfully defended her Pattaya City title, beating #118 Ksenia Pervak and #72 Alberta Brianti both 6-3 6-2, #50 Sybille Bammer 6-0 7-6, #48 Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2 4-6 6-3, and #87 Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4 6-4.

Indeed, Vera was developing a reputation as an iron woman as she played every single day from Thursday 11th February (Pattaya City 2r) to Thursday 18th February (Dubai QF). At Dubai, she beat #28 Elena Vesnina 6-4 4-6 7-5, #83 Kirsten Flipkens 6-0 6-0 and #8 Jelena Janković 6-3 6-2, but finally hit the wall against #6 Victoria Azarenka, crying on court as she lost 6-1 6-3.

Vera reached the fourth rounds of Indian Wells and Miami by beating four players outside the top 41, but lost to #11 Samantha Stosur 6-2 7-5, and #33 Justine Henin 6-1 6-4, respectively.

Vera reached the final of Charleston for the second time in her career, beating #103 Rossana de los Ríos 6-2 6-0, #25 Alyona Bondarenko 6-2 6-1, #36 Melanie Oudin 7-5 6-2, and Caroline Woźniacki 5-2 (Caro sprained her right ankle and had to retire). But in the final, she suffered a crushing 6-0 6-3 loss to #11 Samantha Stosur, who was absolutely on fire. The highlight of the match was Vera's racket-smashing tantrum after double-faulting for 0-6 *0-3 (15/40).

Sadly, the Charleston final seems to have affected Vera's confidence, for she suffered a 6-4 6-0 loss to #62 Petra Kvitová in the first round of Rome, and nobody said she was injured.

At Madrid, Vera extended her ownership of #37 Melanie Oudin to 3:0 with a 6-3 6-4 victory, but couldn't repeat her French Open 2003 win over #3 Venus Williams, losing 7-5 6-3 after leading 4-2* (40/15*) in the first set and 3-1* in the second.

4.1 First-round preview
-----------------------

* VERA ZVONARËVA [21,EF] v Alberta Brianti

As mentioned above, Vera has already beaten Brianti 6-3 6-2 at Pattaya City this year – their only previous meeting. Brianti is currently ranked #75, has a 10:13 win/loss record for 2010 so far, and I've never seen her play.

Brianti started 2010 with a first-round loss at Auckland, and a third-round-qualifying loss at Hobart. She then reached the third round of the Australian Open, beating #100 Varvara Lepchenko 6-0 3-6 6-1, #24 Sabine Lisicki 2-6 6-4 6-4, and losing 6-4 6-1 to #13 Samantha Stosur.

After losing to Vera in the second round of Pattaya City, Brianti lost in the first rounds of Dubai (after qualifying), Indian Wells and Miami – the latter two both in straight sets to players ranked outside the top 60.

Brianti thrashed #80 Julie Coin 6-2 6-0 in the first round of Marbella, only to be thrashed 6-0 6-2 by #28 María José Martínez Sánchez. Brianti then lost 6-2 6-1 to #17 Francesca Schiavone in the first round of Barcelona, and 6-3 6-1 to #146 Lourdes Domínguez Lino in the second round of ITF Cagnes-sur-Mer (after thrashing #113 Ekaterina Bychkova 6-1 6-1).

While Vera lost 6-4 6-0 in the first round of Rome, Brianti upset #29 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 7-6, then lost 6-3 6-4 to #28 Dominika Cibulková.

Brianti then attempted to qualify for Madrid, beating #101 Tsvetana Pironkova 5-7 6-1 6-3, but losing 6-4 7-5 to #55 Iveta Benešová.

This should be a routine, easy win for Vera, but what worries me the most is how Vera could lose 6-4 6-0 to #62 Petra Kvitová at Rome three weeks ago, even though she put that aberration behind her with a respectable performance at Madrid.

Vera has a lot of work to do if she is to be the genuine French Open title-contender that she looked like before last year's ankle-injury at Charleston, and looked like she was getting back to earlier this year – but I fear that she has lost a lot of ground in terms of her confidence. The first sign of a confident Vera is a Vera who dismisses lesser players with exceptional ease, so the first task is to beat Brianti convincingly.

-----------------------------------------------------

+ VERA ZVONARËVA [21,EF] d. Alberta Brianti, 6-3 6-1

This ticks the "beat Brianti convincingly" box on the list of things that Vera has to do if she is to win her first Women's Singles Major here and now, for she went through the whole match unbroken, saving all 4 BPs against her, whilst breaking Brianti four times. Vera also had a very clean W:UE ratio of 18:6.

Vera had 2 BPs to go *4-0 up, but Brianti held to make it *3-1 instead. Games then went with serve until 5-2*, where Vera squandered SP×2 before serving out the first set in the following game.

Vera saved 4 BPs at 6-3 *0-1 (15/40 + Ad×2), then stormed into a 5-1* lead without facing a GP. Vera had 2 MPs at 5-1*, then saved 2 GPs before converting her third MP.

-------------------------------------------------
3. Second-round preview: Zvonarëva v An.Rodionova
-------------------------------------------------

* VERA ZVONARËVA [21,EF] v Anastasia Rodionova

Vera owns a 2:0 head-to-head over Rodionova, thanks to two very one-sided wins:
+ 2008 Doha 1r: Vera won 6-0 6-3
+ 2008 Guangzhou 1r: Vera won 6-1 6-2

Rodionova is currently ranked #92, with a win/loss record of 16:13 for 2010 so far (including her first-round win here). Previously representing Russia, she switched nationality to Australia at the start of the year. I'm not sure whether this factors into anything when she plays faithful Russians such as Vera.

Rodionova has a bit of a temper: she was defaulted from Cincinnati 2007 for whacking a ball in the direction of some fans who were annoying her!

Rodionova started the year by losing in the second round of qualifying for Brisbane, and the third round of qualifying for Sydney – after a notable 6-3 6-3 win over #38 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Rodionova lost 6-1 6-2 to #3 Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round of the Australian Open.

Rodionova beat #62 Kimiko Date Krumm 6-1 1-0 (retired) in the first round of Pattaya City, but was then thrashed 6-4 6-1 by #74 Anna Chakvetadze.

After a second-round-of-qualifying loss at Dubai, Rodionova reached the quarter-finals at Kuala Lumpur by beating #51 Olga Govortsova 6-4 0-6 7-5 and #136 Ekaterina Ivanova 6-2 6-2. She then lost 4-6 6-3 6-4 to #29 Alisa Kleybanova.

Rodionova fell in the first round of qualifying for Indian Wells, but successfully qualified for Miami, and lost 6-4 6-2 to #44 Andrea Petković in the first round proper.

Rodionova then suffered first-round losses at Ponte Vedra Beach and Charleston, but scored a stunning 0-6 6-3 7-5 win over #25 Alyona Bondarenko in Fed Cup.

Rodionova reached the quarter-finals of Estoril by beating #93 Yvonne Meusburger 4-6 6-2 6-1 and #69 Stefanie Vögele 6-4 2-6 6-3, then lost 7-6 6-2 to #74 Anastasija Sevastova: the eventual champion.

Rodionova thrashed #71 Barbora Záhlavová Strýcová 6-0 6-2 in the first round of qualifying for Madrid, but Vögele took revenge for Estoril in the second qualifying-round: 6-4 7-6.

Rodionova reached the quarter-finals of Strasbourg last week, beating #86 Ayumi Morita 2-6 6-3 7-5, and advancing on an early retirement by #63 Elena Baltacha. She then lost 6-4 7-5 to #75 Vania King.

Rodionova beat #99 Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-2 in the first round here.

Conclusion: Rodionova comes into this match with some pretty respectable recent form, but Vera should be far too good for her, beating her in a match no closer than 6-3 6-3.

2. Second-round scoreboard-report: Zvonarëva v An.Rodionova (Thursday 27th May 2010)
-----------------------------------------------------------

- VERA ZVONARËVA [21,EF] lt. Anastasia Rodionova, 4-6 4-6

Vera got off to a *0-2 start, broke back for *3-3, but was broken again immediately en route to dropping the first set.

The first 4 games of the second set went with serve, the next 5 against. The match was rain-delayed for more than an hour with Rodionova leading 6-4 *4-3 (15/40). On the resumption, Vera broke back, but lost the last 2 games of the match.

It's very difficult mentally for the players to deal with a day with long, unpredictable rain-delays, especially for those who are scheduled to play first, as Vera was.

The statistics imply that Vera played okay, but that Rodionova was more aggressive. The one that really sticks out is that Vera won only 50% of the points when she got her first serve in.

Vera's second-round press-conference
------------------------------------

Q. Just wondering how you felt the match went.

VERA ZVONARËVA: You know, I think she played a good match. I think I was just very inconsistent. I was not able to play my game, so I let her dominate a lot. Then every time I would try to play my game, I had just too many unforced errors.

Q. Did she surprise you by how well she played? I think she's been past the first round here before.

VERA ZVONARËVA: No, I was not surprised. I knew her pretty well. I just, I think I didn't play good tennis today, and I think that I was I started to play a little bit better [by] the end of the match.

I think she got, you know, got a tight game. You know, I could have turned the match around many times, and I just didn't use any of the opportunities. I was up 30/0 in a lot of games in the first set; I had the chance to break her also in the first set, and then early in the second set, and I didn't do it. So, yeah, just didn't take my chances.
