Re: Fed Cup : Mladenovi def. Barty 2-6 6-4 7-6(1)

What a dichotomy of the view of Barty as WTA #1. Her heavy serving and slices insulates her against most WTFOMG losses by keeping her level generally consistent, but by no means indomitable.

Most players aren't able to do this for a sustained period of time, hence she is where she is in the rankings, once you stop making errors on her slice and attack her BH, she becomes increasingly tentative and cannot do much else.

Sure, she deserves her ranking and status based on her trophy haul this year but her actual game isn't that impressive for a #1. She's a very nice girl and a consummate professional, none of which excuses her from criticism.

This is a player who is on a winning streak, double bageled someone yesterday, is #1 in the world, playing in front of a partisan home crowd, at the peak of her career thus far, against a much inferior opponent.

We will never hear the end of this from Kiki. Now that she has beaten two no. 1s in one year and LOL lost on a double bagel.
Hopefully Ash rests up for the double.

Barty :smash:

Horrible tiebreak from Ash. Very very bad
Ash was very weak and nervous for most of 2nd and 3rd set :tape:
Just shocking. Painful. Her worst match of the year maybe. So many easy UEs.

I think Australia is done :help:
No way Stosur or Toml will win the next rubber.

Deserved win for Mlad.
She was better and less nervous in 2nd and 3rd set.
Kiki loves playing Fed Cup.

France is the favourite now to win.

Ash played probably one of her worst matches of the season from the 2nd set on, just too many basic errors especially on her FH. She hasn't played well against Mladenovic yet in all their meetings so far.

She couldn't have played a worse tiebreak if she tried really.

Kiki really was out of this up till 26 44, then made two miraculous BH passes to break Ash and then all the momentum was on her side. Looked like Kiki got the momentum in the 3rd and Ash broke back twice, led 6-5 and then just became an error machine.

This is going to give Kiki a lot of confidence, one of the best matches of her career. Very gracious to the Aussie crowd as well.

Australia is now on the ropes. Garcia, even with her dismal showing yesterday, should be the favourite for the next match.

Credit to Ash for fighting the whole time too, wow, what a match after yesterdays blowouts.

Mentally Ash lost the battle with some crucial errors. Fought hard but Mladenovic outlasted her.

Ash too sloppy after the first set. But great heart from Kiki - will be one of her best-ever career memories.

Nice to see her complimenting the sporting crowd too, after her message to the French supporters.

Mladenovic definitely raised her level for this final, but what happened to Barty? Weak serving on key points, BH slices dumped into the net. She was playing more like her 2018 self

So many errors from Ash, just too tired in the end Her 74 match of the year.
Miss 5 Languages was trying much harder today , she only does that against Number 1s or with French support, more consistency from her next year and show Bajin like Naomi did ' we can do without you' :eek:h:

Ash couldn't handle the pressure today imo, such a contrast from yesterday.

It'll be interesting to see how she fares at AO.
