China and India reach Fed Cup Play-offs
07 Mar 2020
Reem Abulleil

Zhang Shuai hailed her team-mates’ dominant performances that helped China P.R. reign supreme in Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group I action this week in Dubai, while Sania Mirza celebrated her squad’s heroic efforts that saw India join the Chinese in securing spots in next month’s Play-offs.
...
China will face the Netherlands in April’s Play-offs, with the winners moving on to the 2021 Qualifiers. Zhang is confident her side can keep pushing forward, and hopes to see China return to the pinnacle of Fed Cup once again.
...
India’s best previous Fed Cup performance came in 2006 when they were the runners-up in Asia/Oceania Zone Group I. They are now two tie victories away from competing in the 2021 Fed Cup Finals, but must first overcome Latvia in next month’s Play-offs.
...
Indonesia were the surprise package of the tournament as they came within one match-win from making the Play-offs, despite being the only team that had just three players on their roster. Their No.1 Sutjiadi and the 16-year-old Nugroho each contested eight matches in five days, and helped Indonesia win two of their five ties to maintain their place in Group I.
...
Nugroho, who won the Australian Open junior doubles title earlier this year, made quite the impression on her Fed Cup debut; so did her compatriot and fellow debutante Janice Tjen.

“The highlight? I think every single match was a highlight for us,” said the 17-year-old Tjen.
...
Like Indonesia, South Korea will stay in Asia/Oceania Group I while Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan will drop to Group II as the bottom two sides in the pool.

Results aside, the action in Dubai this week showcased lots of impressive young talent emerging from Asia, like the 15-year-old Yang Ya-Yi of Taipei and her 19-year-old countrywoman Liang En-Shuo, along with the Indonesian teenagers.
