Which was your favourite rivalry of 2019? I'm referring to matches mainly within this year, not throughout the careers of the players. Possibly the matches between the 2 rivals were unpredictable, and you never knew who would win. Possibly despite one player winning, all the matches were still very close and of high quality. Either way any match between them was something that you knew you had to watch whenever it came up.

When I'm talking about a rivalry, I don't mean a matchup between two players who never actually played this year, or maybe played like maximum one match throughout the year. I would say that's more of a future potential rivalry. But I guess people will list them anyways :spit: so list a future potential rivalry separately from the rivalry of 2019. (Osaka-Andreescu comes to mind)

Some rivalries with a good number of meetings I can think of offhand- Barty-Kvitova, Svitolina-Kenin, Barty-Bertens, Bertens-Vekic, Osaka-Hsieh. I'm sure there are more, so list your favourites! :)

My favorite is Serena (at 36, 37) vs slam finals. That is a new chapter in the Serena story she is writing the last 2 years
I cant think of 2 players who had a rivalry this year. The end of the year, seeing Osaka play Andreescu and Barty was interesting, so those 3 could be future rivals

True, the three of them could have a very interesting rivalry if all of them stay consistent. Wish we got more matches between them though.

The difference with the ATP is that the big 3 are significantly better than everyone else
Barty, Andreescu and Osaka had the best years, but if they all are in the AO, they can lose to someone like Svitolina or Pliskova or Kvitova or Bencic or Serena or Halep or kerber, or whoever is playing well that major
The gaps in ability are much closer in WTA and the stars are not as consistent as the ATP stars. We have to see about Andreescu, but Osaka and Barty had several bad losses this year, even though they had 2 of the best years of everyone

Wow, Konta beat Stephens on all surfaces this year!
Yep, obviously in terms of 'rivalry' it would have been better if Stephens had won at least one of them (although not necessarily from my perspective). Had they met say in Beijing or Wuhan then most would have expected Konta to win given their respective years up until that point, but in 3 of the 4 matches, Stephens started as the pre match betting favourite, and 2 of the 4 meetings were in slams and another was in arguably the most prestigeous P5 (sorry Canadian fans...), so they did have big match feels about them, and while clearly not vintage Sloane, she wasn't her end of season mess. 2 of them also went into a decider.

Yeah, I guess it's not the early 2000s anymore where we had a group of players who used to keep meeting each other and winning all the tournaments. Rivalries aren't as prevalent as back then. Still, I thought it would be interesting to find out what people think anyways.

I wanted to see more of Sabalenka vs Osaka, all we got was Sabalenka been annihilated by Anisimova, and all of Osaka's title defences ended by Bencic.

Agree with Konta-Sloane. What was that? Also Garcia just continuously losing to Brady.

I still don't understand why some players seem to meet so often, while others are yet to meet, even those in the top 50 or so.

Can’t believe no one has mentioned Kerber/Andreescu...

Them playing less than a week apart and the “drama” that came from that had many salivating about future matchups this season that almost, but never did, materialize again...

Martic-Mladenovic :p :grin2: I love Petra so I'm biased but I loved the beatdowns.

Kerber-Andreescu was fun. I'd like to see them play again next year, assuming they're both fit and in decent form.

Osaka-Poots was weird but interesting.

I'd love to see the new girls really develop great rivalries over the next few years, with each other and the old guard before they retire. There's a lot of potential for really good match-ups.

The ones that will create the most excitement

Anything between Barty/Osaka/Andreescu

We need them as the top 3 battling for slams next year.

Osaka vs Andreescu for me. I saw the fire from both of them. Halep vs Andreescu was good but I was so disappointed by Andreescu. How could Halep trouble her? THAT surprised me.
