Re: European Junior Championships Moscow U16

Shocking losses from Linda Noskova and Diana Schneider :help:
But Maria Bondarenko had good results lately. Maybe she will go far.
Not sure how good Sara Suchankova is. A great win for her.

Re: European Junior Championships Moscow U16

Obviously the name is the same, they just transcribed it differently from cyrillic.
Are there no rules how to transcribe correctly ?
So weird they are sisters and have different surnames ...

In Germany for example Schmidt and Schmitt are different surnames.
Also Meier/Maier/Meyer/Mayer are not the same name.

And speaking of transcribed names:
Diana Shnaider obviously has German roots because of her German surname.
They completely mutilated her surname :help: Her correct name would be "Schneider" ;)

Not necessarily. Shnaider is a Jewish family name you often come across in Russia and neighboring countries

Re: European Junior Championships Moscow U16

It should be Karatancheva given that even Sesil uses it like that on social media.

And Shnaider is not mutilated, it's her name transcribed from cyrillic to english which is ofc different as being transcribed to german. It's like Sharapova's name is Шара́пова which in english gets transcribed in Sharapova while in german it's Scharapowa.

Re: European Junior Championships Moscow U16

Well, the origin is German of course. Schneider is the correct word.
Schneider is a German word. And you can't make/write/change it to English.
BTW Schneider means tailor/dressmaker.

And for you non-Germans: The combination "sh" does not exist in German. Only "sch".

There are a few mutilated names from Russia-Germans (Germans who lived in Russia, Ukraine and other ex-soviet-countries but came home to motherland Germany) who were wrongly transcribed from Russian to German. Most of them are correctly transcribed, but also some of them wrong.
For example:
Ox = Ochs is the correct German word.
Fux = Fuchs is the correct word.
They are wrongly translated from Cyrillic.
And German is the origin of these names, and not Russian/Cyrillic.

I have doubts that Diana is Jewish. I saw her wearing a cross.

And Jews have a long history in Germany and German-speaking countries.
And of course they also had German surnames:
Schwarzman(n) = black man
Silbermann = silver-man
Goldberg = gold-mountain
Zuckerberg = sugar-mountain
Goldmann = gold-man
Rothschild = red shield
Blumenberg = flower-mountain
Rosenbaum = tree of roses
Rosenberg = mountain of roses
and many more ...

In most German articles Maria Sharapova is written as "Sharapova" and not changed.

Congrats, Polina Kudermetova ! :yeah:

I hope she will have a better WTA career than Elizaveta Kulichkova and Olesya Pervushina - who also were successful and hopeful Russian junior girls but disappeared.

:grin2: Reading this coming from your Czech names thread on czech players board I can't resist to add that after WWII many german names got butchered, most now existing in both czechisied and original variants, one or the other being more prevalent in particular cases - the one from your post became Šnajdr this way :SNE:
