Ethnic Backgrounds of WTA Players

I thought it would be cool/interesting to start a thread like this. Feel free to add others, as I'm sure there are many more. Rules are that the player must have a current WTA singles or doubles ranking. Players only have to be partially from a certain ethnicity, and obviously the country they represent doesn't count.

Examples:
Aleksandra Wozniak-Polish representing Canada-will be counted for POLISH
Elena Vesnina-Greek and Russian representing Russia-will be counted for GREEK
Ana Ivanovic-Serbian representing Serbia-will NOT be counted for Serbian

Thanks, but I'm only including players with WTA rankings so Chak and Molik won't count :p

Stosur polish??

Lepchenko russian? Isn't she from Uzbekistan with an ukrainian surname?

Isn't Vesnina ukrainian as well?
I once read that Lepchenko faced persecution in Uzbekistan for being "Russian"

And I think Vesnina was just born in Ukraine ;)

She isn't. Her (great?) grandfather is. Or does that count?

I mean, should she really be put in the same category as Kerber and Lisicki? Don't really know.
I'm not sure. I guess then I shouldn't count Stosur as Polish or Oudin as French? I'm not sure how to go about that

Although Vesnina was born in L'Viv, she is ethnically Russian. This having been said, Lepchenko is Ukrainian but grew up in Uzbekistan :)

Simple rules:

-dze and -vili=Georgian
-o=Ukrainian
-ova=Russian or at least Russified.

The others are a mix :)
I know the names thing but are you sure Lepchenko is Ukrainian and not Russian or maybe both? I remember her once saying she was Russian

Isn't her dad Turkish?
She's a crazy mix of things, not Turkish though

Are Cetkovska and Jovanovski Macedonian  I could believe Bojana but Petra  Amra Sadikovic is also :)

Also Jamie Hampton is Korean :)

Pernilla Mendesova is something but I don't know what  Same with Annabel Ossombi :D

Karin Knapp I am sure has some German/Austrian in her given she speaks German fluently and is from a very German area of Italy :)

McHale is Irish/Cuban :)

I don't know if you have this already but Kristina Mladenovic is Serbian :)

Although Teliana Pereira is Brazilian, she is from an Indigenous tribe :)

I think Sharon Fichman is Eastern European as she is an Orthodox Jew :)

Karin is just from a bilingual region of north italy where everyone can speak German

Most Frenchies have foreign names.

Mathilde Johansson - Swedish
Kristina Mladenovic - Serbian
Irena Pavlovic - Serbian
Caroline Garcia - Spanish
Virginie Razzano (could have Italian ancestors?)
Claire Feuerstein (could have German or Swiss ancestors?)

Bartoli is Corsican -- isn't she therefore technically Italian (ethnicity-wise)?

The name suggests she is Jewish :) And Jewish people can be from anywhere, thanks to WWII.
Giorgi is Jewish too.
There are some others I suspect, but without prove I won't talk :)
Peer's father is from South Africa, but who knows how his parents got there and where from...wikipedia doesn't tell :)
Glushko is Ukrainian.

In Judaism the Jewish roots are only count till 3rd generation. 4th generation isn't considered to be Jewish. Maybe you guys should use that too. Grandparents count as ethical background, great-grandparents don't
Other yentas:

- Julia Cohen
- Sara Errani

Pernilla Mendesova - I think some part of her family is from Angola from what I know

Tamira Paszek is a mix of Austria, Chile, Canada, Poland, Tanzania

well to say Karin Knapp has Austrian background just because she is from the German speaking part of Italy which used to be Austria once is def. not correct

neither nastassja is a polish first name or burnett is anything close to a polish surname

unless it's something like magda linette or mariusz fyrstenberg, whose families have been living in poland for very very long and just surnames indicate not polish origins that even the players don't know details about

#43 ·
i quickly asked google :oh: and it said Burnett's mother heritage is Dutch, maybe ?

#45 ·
As others have pointed out:

Paszek is multi-racial and not just Chilean!!
"Her mother is a Chilean-born Austrian of Polish and French descent;[2] and her father, Ariff Mohamed, a Tanzanian-born, Kenyan-raised Canadian Muslim of Indian descent"

Hingis has a double ranking and has Czech roots.

Heather Watson has Papua New Guinean roots
