2001 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix<font=color><font=size><font=color><font=size>

The ETA Tour brings the top players from around the world to Filderstadt, Germany for the Tier II Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The hardcourt indoor event will feature defending champion Martina Hingis who will lead the field as the top seed. Defending finalist Kim Clijsters will not compete here instead opting for the other event this week. The other seeded players include Justine Henin, Ola Abuzkiry, Elena Manevska, Anke Huber, Steffi Graf, Magdalena Maleeva, and Rachel McQuillan.

Local favorites Steffi Graf and Anke Huber will be hoping that the home crowd will boost them to their first ETA singles title. While Martina Hingis will try to recapture the No. 1, Justine Henin will attempt to win her second ETA title and perhaps narrow the gap between her and Hingis.

The $585,000 event will take place at Tennissporthalle Filderstadt.

The Kiwi Shanghai Open, a Tier IV event will feature No. 1 ranked Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand. The $140,000 event in Shanghai, China will see defending champion, Meghann Shaughnessy attempt to defend her title, with other favorites such as Monica Seles, Jelena Dokic, Elena Dementieva, Cris Fernandez, Patty Schnyder, and Kim Clijsters. One of these lucky ladies will walk away with lots of confidence and perhaps their first title.

Tanasugarn is the clear cut favorite and looks to continue her streak fo 6 straight semifinals or better. But don't count out the other players who are capable of assuming the role of a dark horse and taking the championship.

*If you are playing FILDERSTADT, this is an INDOOR event so send points accordingly.

*If you are playing SHANGHAI, this is an OUTDOOR event!

*I have decided that I will change surface points and that will take in effect the first week of the new season. NOT NOW! More details on this later!

*Doubles Draw will come out later this weekend!

If Martina is trying to recapture the number 1 here, then I can only ascertain that she lost the final against Tammy, C'est la vie

Adrian, Martina Hingis was ranked No. 2 last week. She was seeded No. 1 because rankings go back a week. Last week (the Toyota Princess Cup), Tanasugarn gained the No. 1 from Hingis. But seeds are not based on the week before.

For example Manevska was ranked No. 16 until last week where she moved to No. 5. She was not seeded at Moscow because the seeding for the event used the week where she was No. 16. This week's event will have her seeded at No. 5, No. 4 cuz Tammy is not playing.

Its like Lindsay the real one could lose the No. 1 ranking before AO starts, but she will still be the No. 1 seed because seeds are determined a week in advance of an event!

So for the Moscow finals, despite being seeded No. 1 Hingis is the No. 2 player and vica versa for Tammy!

tammy is clearly the highest ranked player in the tournament but she is weary of the fact that there are many dark horses very much capable of defeating her! in fact tammy believes anyone on the tour can beat her if they have an "on" day!

good luck to tammy and cris in doubles! they are reported to be ecstatic about moving up to be the number 4 ranked team on the tour and they are very hungry and determined for more!

Shocking news! Schett moves
to Germany!

Barbara Schett, 25 years old, Austria's #1 tennis player, stated today on Porsche Grand Prix's Press Conference she would change her nationality after the Grand Slam tournament.

"Tennis in Germany is so much developed than in Austria. There are only two tournaments
a year in Austria, while there are nine or more in Germany. Austria's tennis directors never do anything to improve our tennis. Besides, I was already planning to build a house here in Filderstadt, which is a calm city, with 4 tennis courts (red clay, rebound ace, Decoturf and grass) so I can always practice there. German is my second language, so I won't have much trouble to get used to it"

Schett also complained about Fed Cup in Austria, since she is the only Top 50 from there, and the other players are on a lower lever than hers. She declared that she would be delighted to represent Germany on FED CUP next year
