Interview - Steffi Graf

Steffi Graf d. Anna Kournikova 6-4 2-6 7-5

Q: Congratulations Steffi on your first round win, but you must be relieved with that scoreline after the match.
A: Thank you (smiles) well yeah... she played some extraordinary tennis in the 2nd and 3rd sets, I'm just glad I was able to keep up with her in the end. I think she was a bit nervous towards the end of the match and I'm just happy I was able to take advantage of that.

Q: Conchita's next, you played her in Tokyo last week, how do you see this match turning out?
A: Well, it's going to be tough. Last week, she was really tough in the 2nd set, came back really strong after losing the first set. So I'm going to have to be my best when I play her.

Q: Last week, you reached your first semis and lost to doubles partner Elena Manevska, was it a difficult match to play?
A: Definitely, you know, we train together a lot and she knows my game pretty well, like my weaknesses, but so did I with hers. She was just the much better player, and I'm glad she won the whole tournament too (smiles)...

Q: And how about that injury you were carrying in Tokyo last week?
A: I did get treatment for it. I am just hoping to take it slowly. But I'm in a much better position right now. I'm glad it was just a minor scare.

Q: There are rumours flying around here in Moscow that you are dating 21 year old Russian player Marat Safin. Is that true?
A: I have no comments on that... (leaves the interview room immediately!)

Interview with Justine Henin

WC Daja Bedanova def. (3 Justine Henin 7-6(0) 0-6 6-1

Q : Does this loss prove once more that it's more difficult to beat your doubles partner?
JH : (laughs) I think it does, yes. Daja and I are very good friends and we know eachother's game very well so yeah, it's tough to beat your doubles partner.

Q : Are you happy though that's she's doing so well here?
JH : Yes of course, the last couple of weeks have not been easy for her and so I'm happy to see that she's playing so well. I hope she can win it all now!

Q : Together you also won your first doubles match by beating the second seeds. Happy about that?
JH : (smiles) Yes, finally we won a match. We've been struggling a bit lately but I know that together we are a good team, it just didn't come out the past couple of weeks. I hope this win will be the start of a successful doubles season.

Q : Okay Justine, thanks for the interview and good luck in doubles and next week in singles.
Thank you very ;uch and good luck to Daja!

INTERVIEW WITH ELENA DEMENTIEVA
Helena Sukova def. Elena Dementieva 6-0, 0-6, 7-6(1)

Hello Elena, how do you feel after first round loss in your hometown?

I'm little bit disappointed, you know, i played well last two weeks and then i arrived home to Moscow and i was upset in the first round. I lost first set without winning a game, and then i won second 6-0. I played some great shots and level of my game was better and better in the second set. But Helena (Sukova) started to play great tennis in the final set, it seemed that nobody could stop her, it was tough.

You and Jelena Dokic also lost in the first round of doubles (Fernandez/Tanasugarn def. Dementieva/Dokic 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(1))

Yeah, Jelena and me - we're a great team, i think, but it was hard to play against such a good team like Cris and Tammy. They're really great. Congrats to them!

It seems it wasn't easy for you to play in Moscow ....

Yeah, i think something was wrong. I was little bit nervous, fans in Moscow are great ..... i hope next year my results will be better here.

What are your plans now?

I'm leaving for Shanghai tomorrow, i will play Kiwi Open there. I'm looking forward to play in China and to see this country. I have never been to China, so i'm excited ....

Thanks, Elena, and good luck!

Thank you !

Martina hopes the Ace will feel better soon, she is also delighted with her strong return to form, dominating her 2 matches so far. She is also delighted with her and Sandrine becoming a tougher pair to beat instead of the weak players of recent. Both Martina and Sandrine feel it is only a matter of time before the cause havoc in the doubles
