Lucic rallies past Black, to face Coetzer
TOKYO- Mirjana Lucic of Croatia advanced to the second round of the ETA AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships with a win over Clara Black of Zimbabwe. This was Lucic's first win in the main draw of an event. She has played in three previous tournaments and always qualified, but was never able to win her first match, despite having a match point against Jelena Dokic last week.
The seventh seed seemed lost in the first set, winning only 7 points and never even holding serve. The second set was quite the opposite with Mirjana hitting 4 aces as she won the set 6-1. The last set was close, and after serving for the match for the second time, Mirjana was able to take the final set 7-5.
Next up for Lucic is Amanda Coetzer of South Africa who surprised the local crowed by upsetting second seed and favorite Monica Seles in three sets. Lucic is also playing doubles with Kim Clijsters of Belgium. Despite a couple of early losses in qualifying, the team was able to come together last week as they advanced to the quarterfinals. They will face the number three seeds Anne Koethavong and Monica Seles.
